“With the arrival of the VAC Signature SE, that changed. I spent many weeks listening to it, trying to describe how this preamp presented a more realistic reproduction of live music than any other preamp I’d heard in my house, but found it difficult to put into words. True, with every recording I played, the Signature SE gave a flawless performance—I could find nothing even approaching a weakness shortcoming. It produced an illusion of live musicians playing in an actual space better than any preamp I’d heard.”

” The major difference I heard between the two designs was that the Merrill Thor seemed to homogenize the music just a bit when compared to the Pass Labs amp. Here, I mean to imply that the Thor tended to possibly smooth out some harmonic glow or sonic colorations that are part of the actual musical tapestry”

” The Scout was able to generate an impressive three dimensional soundstage with faultless instrument placement. The playing of the snare drum relayed the swats and the slaps of sticks on the drum-skin in a surreal manner. There was both delicacy and finesse in the portrayal of the instruments and low level details were brought forth with aplomb. The upright bass plucks had fullness with a reverent echo of the space in which it was being played, and its position was clearly revealed at the back of the soundstage”

” The new technology used in the 85F tweeter has resulted in better dispersion, which has significantly improved the tonality and timbral accuracy. It has also widened the sweet spot and sound stage significantly. The 85F has one of the best implementations of an aluminum tweeter that I have heard from any speaker at this price point”

“I heard artefacts behind me that I have not heard with other speakers, similar to the Q-sound effects, but filling the whole room (no doubt due to the harmonics effect that Audiofilia speak of). That’s not to say that the imaging wasn’t sharp because every element in the recording (if it was recorded properly) was sharply defined in space providing a clear impression of the wide and (very) deep sound stage. With some music, eg Faithless, when the volume was turned up, it was a bit like listening to that music with headphones on.”

“Compared with the CD stage of my Marantz SA-15S2 Special Edition SACD player, the Audio Space seems to go deeper, with drier and more convincing bass. The sound is more open and airy–certainly less tonally dense in the midrange–with a firmer foundation below and more sparkle up top. In other words the Audio Space is not rolled off à la Marantz. It is more agile, more neutral, less romantic. In a word, more accurate. It loves to rock. It has ample grunt down below.”

“And Type II’s bass is largely unchanged. It is multi-layered, detailed, wide, open, and clean. Both impact and sound pressure are neutral at the ear. You really can feel the shape and make of a bass guitar’s strings. It is as fast as ever, and when spinning organic instruments, textured unlike anything you’ll hear in an earphone.
