” The bass is very much extended, weighty and powerful all in the proper proportions. The LF simply don’t turn the overall sound dark. Despite their true anchoring, the overall sonic quality remains light(filled). I’d not call it airy per se. That often relies on bass of insufficient gravity. If such verbal fencing should drive it home, the Adamante had cubits of air but this quality didn’t become airiness due to sharing equal playtime with a chunky dense midrange and grounded bass of substance. This airiness wasn’t tacked on. It wasn’t separate. It was enfolded like TV chefs talk of folding stiffly beaten egg whites into a batter to make a soufflé. Those whipped egg-white textures were through and through. They weren’t just on top like chantilly cream floating on hot chocolate.”

” The DAC section is an excellent addition for the $800 asking price. Fed via an Audience Au24 USB cable from a MacBook Pro running Pure Music, the 430HA’s DAC had none of the chalky midrange heard in some USB implementations. The tonal balance was smooth and uncolored, with good resolution of detail. The DAC also had an open and transparent spatial rendering for its price. I liked that the DAC had a relaxed and engaging sound with a somewhat laid-back midband. This quality imparted a refinement and sophistication often lacking in sub-$1k DACs.”

“It still sounded a little forward, but this brought out more of the sparkle: so long as I stuck with the better recordings, things were pretty dandy. On Fleetwood Mac’s classic ‘Oh Daddy’ [Rumours, 24/96 HD Tracks], the drum snare is brought to the fore, as is the electric guitar, but the bass is attractively lush with lots of timbre. ”

” Ask around, and you’ll find some people who find the Kaiser 10 to have treble that’s a bit too sparkly. On the other hand others find it a bit too muted and smooth. For what it’s worth, I think both groups are right, and at least in the Kaiser 10 that’s a good thing. The treble here is ever-present, has nice sparkle, but yet manages to be smooth and silky. ”
