” Sonically this translates to a more natural transient. If an actual drum is struck, the initial sharp transient pulse will be felt as well as heard. Conventional speakers without controlled directivity and proper room correction can smear the event in time, compromising tautness. ” What really marks it out from the crowd is the ability to put the music first, this is true regardless of recording quality or type. It will show you what the musician was trying to do whether the recording is high resolution file or a worn slab of vinyl, I even played some transfers of 78s on CD, which sound far better than you’d expect once they’re on a system that’s focussing on the music not the sound. It really makes you wonder why more manufacturers can’t do the same thing; what it is that the guys at Rega have figured out that so few others have. It is that the purpose of hi-fi systems is to let you appreciate music, which seems simple but yet is still a rare quality. The fact that it can be had for this price makes me wonder why not everyone has a pair of Regas in the living room, but that’s another story.”

” The Jimo’s detachable cable also sport the same high quality design philosophy. They are laid in a black plastic coating with some slight twist in the cables beneath. The terminating jack to your DAP has a 135 degree angle to it which makes unplugging a breeze without too much stress on the cable itself. Lastly the attaching points on the cable to the drivers are well designed and built. They simply pop into the drivers and fit snugly. I wouldn’t worry about the drivers disconnecting unless a serious pull was given and an opposing force was put on the drivers. Your cable being caught in the door and pulling on them will not cause the driver to come loose in normal situations; your investment is safe!”

” The final thing of note is that the screen on the M2 is not going to win any awards for pixel density or the depth of blacks etc. The humble TFT panel used just cant compete when compared to todays smartphone offerings. It is certainly fit for purpose though as you won’t be consuming video or playing games on the Shanling Audio M2. The good side of things screen wise is that combined with the simple menu / navigation system the screen actually feels reasonably generous. Brightness levels were not really enough to survive the test of outdoor use on sunny days and text does look a bit washed out even when using the screen at full blast. ”

” So the bass is almost the opposite of a tube amps stigma. Instead of warmth we have tightness, instead of wallowing we have speed, and instead of waves of bass we have quick tight punches. It’s the driest tube amp I have ever heard and renders a hard but compact movement of air. Now while I do like my bass like this and it was just spot on with my ZMFs, HD580s and EL-8s, I did find it just a tad too true with my HD800s, which cant do with just a tad more quantity. This is not an HD800 amp though.”
