AUDEZE EL-8 HEADPHONES – REVIEW
February 26, 2016 Comments Off on AUDEZE EL-8 HEADPHONES – REVIEW
“Moving up the sonic spectrum, the EL-8 has a slightly warmer, and more harmonically complex midrange character than the EL-8C. In comparison, the EL-8C has more upper-midrange energy that moves female vocalists forward in a mix, but robs male vocalists of some of their lower-midrange harmonic richness. Holding the palms of my hands about ¼” away from the open backs of the EL-8, I can almost duplicate these differences, so I suspect they are in part the result of the closed back creating some midrange frequency cancellations.”

MUSICAL FIDELITY NU-VISTA 800 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW
February 26, 2016 Comments Off on MUSICAL FIDELITY NU-VISTA 800 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW
” The enormous soundstage recreated here allows images to spread and individualise in all the perspectives; there’s a sense of gravitas to the music that commands the listener’s attention. This sonic weight is aided by the 800’s command of the low registers. Our speakers are a tough impedance load, in the 80Hz-100Hz range especially, but the 800 just held tight. No matter the bass content the amp reproduced it with phenomenal depth, punch, detail and rhythmic flow. And again, those scary transient attacks provided an entertaining and exciting factor to well-recorded rock.”

GRYPHON DIABLO 300 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER $25,000 REVIEW
February 26, 2016 Comments Off on GRYPHON DIABLO 300 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER $25,000 REVIEW
” The cinematic soundscapes of In a Time Lapse from Ludovico Einaudi’s CD release illustrated the Gryphon’s valve-like handling of tonal colours. This recording is rich with piano, violin and guitar, among other acoustic instruments, and the Diablo 300’s reproduction of the beautiful and moving compositions displayed natural and complex midrange timbre, with all the instruments having a sense of presence both in terms of transparent verisimilitude and that hard-to-describe sense of body… of image gravitas. That midrange kinship with the very best of valve amplification is something rather extraordinary for a solid-state amplifier – an integrated no less.”

Cypher Labs Sustain84 Headphone Amplifier Review
February 25, 2016 Comments Off on Cypher Labs Sustain84 Headphone Amplifier Review
“The Sustain84 holds its own quite well when compared to more expensive amplifiers such as my Woo Audio 5. Although it doesn’t quite have the same effortless liquidity and micro-detail retrieval, it isn’t too far off and transparency is only slightly less; certainly not noticeable unless you really look for it. The big difference between the two here is in the different sound of the tubes. The ECL84 tubes are warm and dynamic, whereas the Woo’s 300B and 6SN7 tubes provide a softer and more ethereal sound

MYST ORTOPHONES REVIEW
February 25, 2016 Comments Off on MYST ORTOPHONES REVIEW
“No MyST headphone will win a beauty competition. Their machine work is all tough and rumble; it will go through your car’s windscreen if thrown with enough muscle. If a thief sneaks into your flat at night, gird up your loins and whip out your MyST phones and stab their eyes in with the adjustment posts. You’re a boss.”

, especially if the balanced topologies in both are exploited. While the single-ended circuits are excellent, trading up to balanced elevates the performance to exceptional – and I dare say peerless – in this price range. This should not surprise, since both models were designed from inception to run balanced. Schiit are resolute about the superiority of balanced over single-ended when properly implemented and in the context of these components at least I am compelled to concur. I detected improvements in clarity, presence, separation, spaciousness and dynamics each time I replaced a single-ended connection with a balanced one, first between the DAC and amp and then between the amp and headphones. The difference between all single-ended and all balanced was not a trivial one and, in my experience, only the latter allows Gungnir Multibit’s resolution and musical fluidity and Mjolnir 2‘s rich palette of textures and vivid holographics to be fully appreciated.”
