UNIQUE MELODY MAVERICK REVIEW

“On the upper mids: this is a very important area for me. When an IEM gives sibilance it immediately becomes a disappointment to me. Fortunately the Maverick is also successful with the upper mid control: it never sounds harsh if the recording and the source have reasonable quality. Another plus here.”

BOWERS & WILKINS 803 D3 FLOORSTANDING LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW

” I didn’t mention it before but this is a ported speaker; the port points down at the base so you don’t see it and it’s so well tuned that you don’t hear it either. As a long time transmission line user, I have grown sensitized to port character, but couldn’t detect any extra bloom to the bass with the 803 D3. What was easy to hear is supremely articulate, precise, and yet musically fluent sound quality with a range of sources and amplifiers, but this level of transparency means that the less able partnering equipment is very easy to identify”

Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II Review

” Here the Rogue delivers a muscular sound with wide ranging dynamics and plenty of punch. It’s not afraid of the seismic crescendos in this piece, and renders them with solidity and composure.”

PAI AUDIO MR2 REVIEW
August 28, 2016 Comments Off on PAI AUDIO MR2 REVIEW
“Bass on the MR2 isn’t undercooked but it does sound a little soft and lacking in definition at times with some minor bleed into the mids. Sub-bass is somewhat rolled off below 50Hz so extension on both ends is not spectacular. The majority of the bass action is higher up from 100HZ onwards. It’s not a lean bass presentation by any stretch of the imagination and it has good enough impact to sound at home with dynamic bass performances from the likes of Justice and their bombastic talk box driven “Civilization”. I would love for Pai just to drop the elevation by 2-3dB on the mid and upper bass and increase sub-bass by 1-2dB though that may not be possible with their dual BA design.

Lawrence Audio Violin SE Loudspeakers $8,500 Review
August 27, 2016 Comments Off on Lawrence Audio Violin SE Loudspeakers $8,500 Review
” I was so impressed with the Cubist connection that I set up the left speaker `appropriately ‘ in front of my own prized Cubist influenced painting. With minor modification of toe-in and distance from the back wall to optimize sound, it remained there throughout my review, where I felt it belonged; I think it truly felt at home.”

PS Audio’s DirectStream Junior Review
August 27, 2016 Comments Off on PS Audio’s DirectStream Junior Review
“But it gets better. Album name and song title info are displayed on the DSJ’s OLED display – a nice touch – but where this unit’s user-friendliness really takes us into orbit is with volume attenuation. Not only is the tactility of the DSJ’s rotary more enjoyable than the more finicky finger-drag of the DirectStream’s touchscreen, the DSJ’s volume control enjoys two-way communication with Roon’s. Move Roon’s volume slider on an iPhone or Macbook and watch the volume change on the DSJ itself. Turn the DSJ’s infinite rotary and watch the Roon slider move.”

Pass HPA-1 Headphone Amplifier $3,500 Review
August 26, 2016 Comments Off on Pass HPA-1 Headphone Amplifier $3,500 Review
“Rather than bore you with audiophile cliché after cliché, let’s break it down. The Pass HPA-1 is on the top tier of the world’s finest headphone amplifiers, regardless of cost, end of story. If you can live with the single-ended functionality and a single output, you’ll have a tough time getting better sound anywhere. It is an expensive headphone amplifier, but delivers the goods. If you are only looking for a headphone amplifier, this is the top of the heap.”

VOODOO ISO-POD ISOLATION SYSTEM $399 (set of 4) Review
August 26, 2016 Comments Off on VOODOO ISO-POD ISOLATION SYSTEM $399 (set of 4) Review
“Which brings us to the Iso-Pod Isolation system from VooDoo Cable (a company whose fine power cords I’ve reviewed in the past.) Based in Oakland, California, VooDoo uses a slightly different formula to achieve isolation goals. Outwardly the Iso-Pods look like innocent, circular discs. Their flat, felt-covered surface makes them very stable beneath a component. But inside, things get more interesting. Each Iso-Pod is actually a pair of CNC-machined aerospace alloy discs that are suspended from within by three small zirconium ball bearings that rest in tiny individual dimples. Like a ball-bearing sandwich, the assembly is held together by powerful opposing magnets centered in each disc. Iso-Pods ship in combinations of three or four discs.”
