” To begin my evaluation, I started with some familiar two-channel female vocals. In streaming the hi-res version (HDTracks, 24/96) of Sara Bareilles singing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” from her live album Brave Enough: Live at the Variety Playhouse (Sony Legacy), I was impressed with the MTM-210T’s ability to resolve fine details in the recording. ”

“For classical music listeners, the most immediate rewards come in the form of ambient information. A prime example would be the LP of the Copland Fanfare [Dallas, Johanos: Analogue Productions], which depends on the explosive kettledrums and trombones to establish the majesty of the piece. Take the REL out of the system, and the cavernous, immersive soundstage becomes a narrower, more generic space.”

I remain adamant there is no such thing as a universally “best speaker” since listener preferences, upstream equipment, and room acoustics all weigh into the equation. Taking those variables into account in my own case, I have not yet encountered another speaker that achieves such a Goldilocks-like “just right” balance for my own sonic preferences. RS3s offer a perfect combination of detail, soundstaging, speed, realism, and overall musicality. It’s a fantastic achievement.”

“When I compared MQA conversions of my own recordings with the originals, on some headphones I could not discern any sonic differences, but on those headphones and in-ears that I currently use for reference, such as the Ultimate Ears RR and Mr. Speakers Ether C, I could hear the improved resolution. For me the improvements manifested by the MQA-encoded files were in soundstage specificity, image placement, and low-level detail”

ADVANCED ACOUSTICWERKES NEBULA ONE REVIEW

September 25, 2016 Comments Off on ADVANCED ACOUSTICWERKES NEBULA ONE REVIEW

“Treble on the Nebula One is a bit of a mixed experience. On the one hand, it isn’t overly harsh, forward, or to too strident but on the other hand, it can sound a little too brittle and thin, especially in the lower treble response. Cymbal and percussion work doesn’t have a really natural timbre though I would not describe them as splashy or peaky sounding, just lacking in body.”

TEKTON DESIGN PENDRAGON TOWER SPEAKERS REVIEW

“Vertical seating position has some impact on the treble of the Pendragons. Place your ears significantly below or above the tweeter stack and the treble becomes slightly rolled-off sounding. Cure this by positioning your ears within the vertical height of the tweeter array. A person of average height sitting in a typical chair should be very close to the tweeters’ bottom height.”

ASTELL & KERN AK70 REVIEW

September 23, 2016 Comments Off on ASTELL & KERN AK70 REVIEW

” The AK70 is the first full-featured AK device to skips the bow ties, the facets, the extra chins, the grills, and the fish bulbs of Astell&Kern’s latest players, whose design ethos is best described: awful shapes because we can. The AK70 also skips the stupid, tip-toeing-leaning stance of the AK380. Yes, its Korean edges poke and prick. They may even draw blood. Yes, it needs a case. And while I’m not keen on how far left its screen shifts just for the hell of it, I love that it’s square. It is AK’s maturest design yet.”
