” I spent many weeks over months listening to Ace, the company recommends 400 hours of playing before taking Ace too seriously, so it got to pass all kinds of music from Hoagy Carmichael to Acid Mothers Temple…, from Current 93 to Golijov, and from The Bug/Earth to Patsy Cline. And everything in between. And I always liked what I heard. If I try to imagine a person having purchased Ace and being unhappy about their purchase, I come up blank.”

“Max Richter’s “Recomposed: Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons” that sometimes subtly and sometimes overtly revamps the original Vivaldi masterpiece was a joy over the X. Somehow the real chamber strings and synthesized sounds never clashed, and the ‘X just lets them be. Switching over to another of my favorite in-ears in the X’s price range, the 1More Quad Driver, that one made more, but less well-defined bass. In fact, the Quad Driver’s sound was less clear, less exciting, but that headphone was easier to listen to with harsh, over-compressed recording like Austin, Texas pop rockers Spoon’s latest album, “Hot Thoughts.” Their songs are just as good as ever, but like most recent Spoon albums, the sound grates on the ears with the X.”

” A piece of jazz-rock that helps me identify equipment that brings out the emotion of recordings is Blood, Sweat and Tears’ rendition of “God Bless The Child,” a piece written by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr., and appropriately included in the list of the Songs Of The Century by the National Endowment for the Arts and the RIAA.

” Your music loving friends that don’t aspire to be or insist on degenerating into audiophiles are going to love the performance of the Model 4s. An emotionally engaging experience is offered that includes pretty exceptional macrodynamic contrasts from such a small speaker, making them a finish line speaker in medium to small rooms. They do “deep bass” which is a holy grail for some, but do it with a measure of subtlety. ”

” I really lucked out. When people found out that I had a nice LP set up at home, some brought me LPs as gifts, and some, from an older generation, donated their entire collection to me—and wished me the best of luck. I had ample of both during my review of the Grado Labs Statement v2 cartridge; so man did I have fun listening over the last 2 months. For example, my brother Nick (for my birthday) gave me wonderful LPs such as a 1966 ”

“The single pair of binding posts for connecting the entire Alexx to a power amplifier—three other pairs of binding posts, for the midrange and treble drivers, accept the spade lugs with which the crossover’s wiring looms are terminated—are low on the bass bin’s rear panel, but higher than on the Alexandria XLF, where they’re too close to the floor for the comfort of thick, bulky speaker cables. Sometimes I wonder if speaker and amplifier makers even try to hook up their products in real-world situations.

VISION EARS VE8 – REVIEW

” The VE8 picks up a lot of noise with ALO Audio’s tube powered CV5 and as it’s audible during music playback, it’s a no go for me. When you can hear past the noise then you get a very rich sound with superb bass, rich mids and energetic treble. Such a shame about the CV5’s noise as this would have been a superb combination. With ALO Audio’s CDM in full balanced mode, you more or less get the same story but there is less noise which allows you to listen to music without it disturbing you. The sound is very clear, fast and precise with great dynamics.”

” Still, there’s a lot to like about the X5 3rd Gen: its sound quality is pretty good, it supports a number of different file types, it gives you easy access to the most popular streaming services, and it’s built well too.”
