“The first clue to just how engaging the Amati Tradition could be was when I cued up the title track of Ludovico Einaudi’s Una Mattina (16/44.1 FLAC, Decca). I was immediately aware of previously unheard details, such as the sound of Einaudi’s foot working his piano’s pedals, the longer notes when he pressed the sustain pedal, and the piano’s tonal color. In combination with how convincingly the large Amati Traditions seemed to “disappear” from the room, it all added up to a compellingly realistic and emotionally evocative experience.”

AMPSANDSOUND KENZIE ENCORE –REVIEW

“The overall sound staging was simply breathtaking and definitely one of the widest and deepest I’ve ever heard these headphones offer. The wonderfully rich and tube-like presentation did not take away from the HD800S’s ability to portray even the smallest micro-details of this recording. In fact, detail retrieval was simply outstanding and when coupled with the very natural tube-like sound, the Kenzie Encore had me rethinking my “solid state only” setup. In fact, had it not been for recently acquiring a Chord DAVE DAC, I would have purchased the review unit outright as it was that darn impressive”

“The more I listened to these, the more they grew on me. They don’t have overblown bass, but have speed and accuracy on their side. They are not a smooth and laid back sounding IEM, they offer up an exceptionally detailed and complete sound for the price and amount of drivers. I really like this tuning, and believe Clear Tune have done a superb job getting a lot out of these 2 drivers. If you like a slightly mid forward, highly detailed and accurate sound, these should be high on your list.”

Keces Audio S3 Fully Balanced Headphone Amplifier / DAC Review

“The S3 has an effortless sound to it, never sounding strained or lacking in dynamics, it can deliver thunderous bass with ease and without sounding muddy. Transient response is excellent (headphone dependent too). It has no issues driving the Ether Flow to ear damaging levels, and never falters with them. The S3 delivers a full bodied and tonally balanced sound, that is easy to listen to but at the same time there is so much detail. Micro detail is all there, soundstage is not artificially boosted however it is very well layered and separated”

“The TAD ME-1 is one of the finest loudspeakers I’ve had in my room. From 40Hz up, it rivals anything else at any price. This jewel of a speaker — the build quality is of the highest order — will give you expertly voiced sound that belies the size of its cabinet, and will play at output levels that will do justice to your most raucous musical selections. The pair of them imaged like lasers, and could cast a soundstage as wide and as deep as my room allowed. Nor is this merely a great small-room speaker — that description would be a huge disservice. It filled my Music Vault with full, rich, detailed sound that never fatigued me and never bored me.”

“Starting with the positives, these headphones have good understanding of the high end of the frequency range. Played through other headphones, the twanging guitar in the first section of the track can sometimes leave you wincing – but not here.

Each note is clean and well articulated, and should you listen to harsh or bright recordings these headphones will round off your sound to something less abrasive.

Audeze LCDi4 in-ear headphones $2495 Review

“With their lack of edge or brightness, the Audeze LCDi4s excelled with electric guitar. José Neto’s electric guitar on the Winwood album sounded clean when necessary and overdriven when musically appropriate, as in his solo in “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys.” And if I’m mentioning recordings of electric guitar, I must play something by that master of the instrument, Bill Frisell. Listening to “That Was Then,” from Live in Tokyo, Japan: July 21, 2000 (16/44.1 FLAC, Bill Frisell Downloads), again I was struck by how the LCDi4s’ lack of mid-treble aggression allowed me to appreciate both Frisell’s artistry and his artful use of effects. Perhaps some might feel that the Audeze ‘phones were taking away some of the instrument’s attack, but I didn’t feel musically shortchanged.”

Quiet passages conveyed ample negative space and were noise-free. And when the clangorous swells of guitars and keyboards eventually burst in, the sound retained a sense of ease, as opposed to becoming strained. Furthermore, the bass guitar sounded rock-solid and deep, and it retained its fullness over a range of volume levels. For kicks, I turned on SRC again to convert the Tidal FLAC stream to DSD. Same as with the Young track, the sound transformed in a good way: Details that had been layered deep in the mix, such as burbling synths and a forlorn, faraway trumpet, gained in clarity. To use a visual metaphor for what I was hearing, it was like tweaking the focus on a pair of binoculars.
