Chord Blu MkII review

“Why would you want to add noise to the data stream? Using dither is a well-known technique in digital products to help improve resolution at very low signal levels. Here it only works for 16-bit signals, letting 24-bit streams pass unaffected.

With CD, we prefer the sound with the added dither as there’s a slightly greater sense of solidity and overall subtlety.”

RBH Signature Reference SV-6500R Floorstanding Speaker Review

“. In chapter eight, Peter Parker’s classmates enter the Washington Monument elevator for a tour, only to have an explosive device go off, putting them in grave danger of falling. Spider-Man scales the wall of the monument to save his friends. In the process, a police helicopter swoops in to try and stop Spider-Man, who they think is a terrorist. The aggressiveness of the scene’s soundtrack when played through the RBH Signature Reference SV-6500R towers and SV-661R center channel presented every element with as much width, depth, and seamless movement as possible with a 5.2 configuration. There was a great balance between the RBH front-end, the Aerial Acoustics surround sound support, and the JL Audio low-end intensity that, all together, they provided one of the film’s most demanding action scenes with sonic clarity, precision, and intensity. The dialogue was always clear and detailed, with unwavering spatially accurate positioning. The music was reproduced with seamless spacing and pinpoint clarity.”

HIFIMAN EDITION X V2 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES $1299 REVIEW

“What has not changed is the terrific sound quality offered by the original Edition X’s as well as the entire line of HiFiMan planar magnetic headphones. The Edition X’s are lightweight at only 399g and come in a striking black with silver accents that I really like. They are extremely comfortable and can easily be worn for as long a listening session you choose to have. From a technical standpoint, planar magnetic headphones have the ability to generate outstanding treble. Frequencies shimmer out and away without any harsh edge. Very natural in the decay. The distribution of the conductive layers across the whole surface of the diaphragm provide an even and controlled waveform resulting in very low distortion. Soundstage and imaging are positively impacted by this approach.”

IFI AUDIO MICRO IDSD BLACK LABEL PORTABLE HEADPHONE AMP, PREAMP, AND DAC REVIEW

REASD HERE

“From the outset, the Black Label offered the smooth, engaging, and highly musical presentation we’ve come to expect from iFi and AMR components, but with a significant twist. Specifically, the Black Label offered audibly enhanced transient speed, definition, clarity, and resolution vis-à-vis the iFi models that preceded it. As a result the Black Label breaks with past iFi tradition in a good way, offering a sound that finds the just-right balance point between natural warmth and inviting musicality on the one hand, coupled with dramatic levels of focus, detail, and transient agility on the other. Musically speaking, this combination of sonic virtues is simply intoxicating.”

HIFIMAN SHANGRI-LA ELECTROSTATIC HEADPHONE SYSTEM $50.000 REVIEW

‘The Shangri-La system offers neutral tonal balance and remarkable freedom from the ‘highs-covered-in-plastic-wrap’ colourations to which some electrostatic headphones are prone. The top end of the Shangri-La headphones is as linear, detailed, and extended as anyone could possibly wish, yet at the same time they consistently manage to sound smooth and clear—never adding or in any way exaggerating high-frequency energy that isn’t actually present in the recording. This achievement is greatly to HiFiMAN’s credit. ”

Q Acoustics Concept 500 review Review

“That’s not to say these speakers don’t need anything better to shine. The downside of the Concept 500’s aggressive pricing – remember we’re talking high-end standards where £4000 is considered entry-level – is there’s a strong likelihood they be partnered with similarly priced sources and amplification.”

ASTELL&KERN KANN DAP $1,000 REVIEW

‘Admittedly the KANN doesn’t have the deep bass extension and control of my reference unit, and I prefer a little more musical midrange, but those who enjoy the Astell&Kern sound, as well as, lovers of pop music will truly appreciate the KANN’s ability to drive full sized headphones, while tube amp fans will most likely want to stick to using an external amp.”

Systemdek • 3D Reference Mk II Turntable £29,995 Review

“One area that challenges any suspended design is speed stability, and in this respect the Reference Mk II was no different. Bracketing on the Feickert Platter Speed app was noticeably more lax than on the close-coupled decks like the Kuzma Stabi M or VPI Classic 4, and playing piano recordings in particular, the lack of absolute pitch and temporal security was apparent, whether in the diminished dexterity of Benedetti Michelangeli or the subtle lack of physical substance underpinning the instrument on Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms” (The Boatman’s Call [Stumm 142]). Is this a deal-breaker? No. Indeed, until the appearance of decks like the VPI Classic and the Grand Prix Audio Monaco, the sonic impact of relatively poor speed stability was the dirty secret we all lived with. Those decks weren’t the first (or even close to being the first) to advance the cause of temporal accuracy — but they were the ones that dragged the issue kicking and screaming into the harsh light of audiophile day.”
