Abyss Diana Review
May 17, 2018 Comments Off on Abyss Diana Review
“Diana doesn’t sound much like its bigger brother AB-1266 headphone. That one demonstrates what a talented headphone designer can accomplish when the compromises of size, weight and cost are put aside to achieve greatness. If you want the absolute best sounding headphones, the AB-1266 deserves serious consideration. It was revised last year and is now called the AB-1266 PHI Reference. Its prices start at $4,495”

MOON NEO MIND STREAMING UPNP RENDERER REVIEW
May 17, 2018 Comments Off on MOON NEO MIND STREAMING UPNP RENDERER REVIEW
“The Moon Neo MiND UPnP renderer/ streamer does its job so well, you sometimes wonder if you are being subtly influenced to like it through MiND control. It slots into practically any system with a DAC with ease and brings what could easily be dismissed as a ‘legacy’ system bang up to date. The chances are, if you are exploring this kind of upgrade, the Neo MiND might be your first Moon product, but once you’ve played with it for even the shortest time, you’ll realise it won’t be your last. Outstanding and highly recommended”

ATLAS CABLES ZENO HEADPHONE CABLE REVIEW
May 17, 2018 Comments Off on ATLAS CABLES ZENO HEADPHONE CABLE REVIEW
“What the Zeno does is lift a slight veil from the sound of most stock cables, subtle details are now more easily picked out and instruments find a more defined place within the soundstage. The Zeno is an effortless sounding cable; it will not alter the stock sound signature but rather enhance it. The stock HiFiMan cable is terrible ergonomically and it is silver plated copper bringing out a little bit of extra presence in the treble. Now I do not think the stock cable is bright, but it does not have the most natural of timbre to it, it can sound a little metallic. Changing over to the Van Damme cable brought out a little more linearity, but not a huge difference. Going to the Zeno you immediately notice that there is more substance to the sound, more body but not at the expense of extension or detail retrieval.”

Spendor A2 Loudspeakers $2395 Review
May 16, 2018 Comments Off on Spendor A2 Loudspeakers $2395 Review
“My preamp is the new PS Audio Gain Cell DAC (reviewed HERE), which combines a truly superb balanced, analog preamp with an ambitiously good and tailorable DAC; it also offers every digital input imaginable, and is remarkably transparent for an under $2K combo unit. For digital sources, I have an Oppo disc-spinner that I use as a CD transport and for SACDs; I also employ a custom-built Acer laptop with a complement of multiple Solid State Drives as my music server. It’s connected to the Sonore UltraRendu (reviewed HERE) for streaming digital files to the PS Audio DAC; in between is a JCAT USB Isolator for galvanic noise suppression. Analog sources include a new Project The Classic SB turntable (reviewed HERE); it’s fitted with a magnificent Hana EL moving coil cartridge that’s connected to the also superb Sutherland KC Vibe Phono Preamp; reviews of the two latter items are forthcoming shortly. Cables are all by MG Audio (loudspeaker connections), AudioQuest and Project (single-ended analog interconnects), Pangea (silver USB and coax digital interconnects), and Blue Jeans Cables (balanced analog interconnects and system network cables).”

MQA Review
May 15, 2018 Comments Off on MQA Review
” If you’ve read some of the articles on this website or the chapter in the book, you already know that wrapping ultrasonic frequencies (20-40 kHz) beneath the audio band sounds quite reasonable but only if the original masters have meaningful amounts of ultrasonic content — they don’t. So why bother developing a complex “origami” folding scheme when the only partials being folded are noise, hiss, recording bias, and other uncorrelated signals. If you don’t start with a bona fide high-resolution recording, then MQA is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. And virtually all commercial releases regardless of period are standard resolution.”

Monoprice Monolith 12″ and 15″ THX Ultra Subwoofers Review
May 15, 2018 Comments Off on Monoprice Monolith 12″ and 15″ THX Ultra Subwoofers Review
“Unboxing either subwoofer is a two-person job: The 12” weighs just under 100 pounds (98.5, to be exact), and the 15” weighs 128.5 pounds. Then there’s the added weight of the double-boxed shipping container. There are no instructions for unpacking the beast, but it’s best to open the top of the outer box, slowly flip the whole thing over, and lift the outer box off the inner one. Repeat the process to remove the sub from the inner enclosure; your back will thank you. Each sub has spiked rubber feet, so it’s best to use some sliding furniture movers (available at your local hardware store) to position it. Monoprice includes a pair of white gloves in case you want to provide your own white-glove service and keep oily fingerprints off the satinfinish, black ash vinyl.”
