“I found after experimenting that the Sky Towers to my ears sounded much more full-bodied after being bi-wired. While not a runaway decision, bi-wiring seemed to add a deeper bass extension and gave the playback a natural breath that was just irresistible. While the Sky Towers do pack a stinging musical punch, if you are looking for loudspeaker that can forcibly knock you back down in your seat, these Totems might not be your cup of tea. Unbridled power and an iron grip choking your music to death is not what you are going to find here. The Sky Towers are a sonically graceful home run that allows you to rock when you need to rock and allows you to be carried off when you need escape. The Sky Towers offer a rounded and complete delivery with enough finesse and detail to allow you to joyfully rediscover your music collection all over again. With certainty, it is hard to imagine how anyone would think they are not getting more for their entry fee than they had expected.”

While the Krell Theater 7 is not a traditional Class A amplifier because of its dynamic bias, the Krell Theater 7 sounds more like Class A than I’ve heard in most amplifiers. For those who seek the best quality in amplification for their home theaters, the Krell Theater 7 sets a new standard at this price point. We all like a good comeback story, and the Krell Theater 7 certainly is setting up a nice future for this lauded brand.”

Parasound’s HINT 6 amplifier Review

“Hitting the HINT 6 hard with some of the more raucous concerts from the newly released R.E.M. Live at the BBC box set was a lot of fun. This amp really did a great job communicating the band’s rhythm section’s agility. I also learned that this music sounds best played loud, so I took advantage of the amp’s power reserves.

The HINT 6 never sounded like it was working very hard, even with my inefficient Magnepan .7 speakers. With that much power on tap, the speakers sounded better and better played nice and loud.”

“’m fine with the vinyl resurgence having less than honorable beginnings. Ask any hipster on the street if they are a hipster, and you’ll be met with protestations and denial. Go to your local record store and ask any hipster with vinyl in hand, “What do you like about vinyl?”, and they’ll tell you plainly “it’s the sound.” Ask them next, “What do you listen on?”, and nine out of nine times it will be a Crosley suitcase turntable, or a “vintage” thrift-store turntable on it’s last legs. This answer doesn’t exactly jive with what us audiophiles know to be the reality of proper vinyl playback. What millennials are having is indeed a lo-fi experience. But as time goes by during this resurgence many of today’s vinyl collectors — who got into it ironically — soon found themselves experiencing something unexpected as more affordable hi-fi turntables entered the market. Entry level hi-fi turntables are now fashionable as decor pieces and making regular appearances in tech blogs, YouTube channels, and within the mandatory reading material of millennial hipster sub-culture.”

Burmester Ambience BA71 Loudspeakers $55,000 Review

“With the Ambience BA71s positioned as best as I could manage, and before doing any serious listening, I let them burn in for a good 200 hours, which gave me time to think about why I’d had so much trouble getting these speakers to sound right in my room. I concluded that there were just too many cooks in the kitchen. My first struggle had been with the BA71s’ MTM arrays and getting the image to snap into focus: I’d found that the Burmesters’ listening window was very narrow — I had to position my head just so between the speakers. My next challenge was with the AMT: when I listened on its axis, the sound was just too bright, even with the rear, ambience AMT dialed all the way down. As I reduced the speakers’ toe-in to smooth out the AMTs, I had to be very careful not to lose proper imaging. Minimizing toe-in seemed to increase the efficacy of the rear-firing AMT, but I had to be careful here, too — if I got too greedy for ambience, the increased high-frequency energy translated to a leaner upper midbass, emphasizing the brightness from the front-firing AMT.”
