Sennheiser IE 900 Review

The first difference with balanced is that you in single ended configuration get a more intimate presentation, with less space between the notes and an overall less airy presentation. You do get he sense of the IE 900 sounding fuller. The second main impact is on the bass, which in single ended mode isn’t as precise and extended, but it do is fuller and it comes in with more punch and impact.

The third difference is in the top end extension and energy, which now is not as pronounced. And finally the vocals blend in more where they in balanced mode are more upfront. All-in-all you in SE mode get a full sounding, still balanced IE 900. In SE mode it’s a bit more about quantity and presence than it is about transparency and precision, but it’s still very good on all levels.

I was. Replacing class-AB amps that cost many times more, surrounded by comparably high-end equipment, the ELAC Alchemy DPA-2 Switchable Stereo/Mono Power Amplifier delivered far more musical truth and pleasure than you might expect. Chief designer Peter Madnick has exceeded his goal “to provide the kind of real-life transparency and clarity that you would not expect at this price point, as well as an overall balance that would lead you to say, ‘Wow, that thing’s really good for the money.'” He may also have created a benchmark product for this price range—not that I’ve heard all the monoblocks that are available for under $3000/ pair. (There aren’t that many.) But if there are many other equally fine amps at this price, budget-conscious audiophiles are living in a golden age. Enthusiastically recommended

The crux of loudspeaker design is the art of making choices and striking the right balance. The BRX chose transparency, finesse, and nuance to communicate the experience of real musicians performing in acoustic space. Yes, there are compact speakers in this class that have a more direct sound and ring out with a bit more extension and seat-of-the-pants slam—more Reznor than Rossini, if you will. But the GoldenEar BRX is a black-tie classicist of a very high order. You won’t need a golden ear to enjoy its class-leading blend of musicality and refinement.

McIntosh C53 Preamplifier and MCT500 SACD/CD Transport

So that I don’t come out sounding like a complete spoilsport when it comes to my earlier broadside against superhero movies, my 14-year-old daughter has become quite the fan of Marvel Comics and the movies made from them. During the pandemic she watched them all, and I will confess to having a good time joining her for some of these, notably Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is filled with more action and CGI than any ten movies can handle. The sound work is genuinely sensational, which is exactly the way it sounded with the soundtrack routed through my two-channel setup: everything clear, clean, well separated and registered, with dynamic range wider than can be comfortably accommodated in a domestic setting—during some of the battle scenes the detonations were such as to make me happy our house is anchored to its foundation. And, yes, I confess, very dramatic, very exciting, very entertaining, and no, never once did we miss back channels.
