UE 5 Pro Review: Affordable Custom Fit IEMs

The lower treble starts out on the same plane with the upper midrange with snare rattle having clean edges and enough definition to sound realistic and cymbals having enough energy to sound good without getting tizzy or metallic.

Above the initial lift, the treble dials back a bit and is quite polite through the mid treble where fatigue and stridency can quickly creep in; roll-off is somewhere above 14 kHz.

The soundstage is good but like most closed IEMs that isolate to this degree, it isn’t huge in any dimension. Instead, what you get is an intimate performance with good proportion to the stage if not a lot of size to it.

Ampsandsound Zion Amplifiers $24,000 Review

June 19, 2022 Comments Off on Ampsandsound Zion Amplifiers $24,000 Review

In all honesty, I have never heard a bad ampsandsound product. Some of their products did not match my needs, but all were excellent, and at their price points provided a level of value rarely found in high end audio. The Zions are no exception to that rule even at their $24,000 retail price. Most people who have purchased the Zions did so because they had never heard a better amplifier. I have spoken to several of them to confirm. I count myself in the group and I am very happy about it. It has become my reference and every amplifier that comes into my listening room is now measured against the Zions. The fact that they are based on one of audio’s most famous and fabled amplifiers is just icing on my listening cake.

If you want the equivalent of a 911 GT3 in your audio rack, the Zions should be on your short list. They are exceptional in every way. I wish they were easier to work with, but if that is the cost for the performance, then it’s a cost I will happily pay. As I said earlier in the review, I own the Zions, I believe more people should. They have my highest recommendation.

Bluesound PowerNode streaming integrated amplifier $899 Review

Roon spoils us with its detailed playback path and file resolution information, something we audiophiles care a lot about but apparently most others don’t. In contrast, BluOS provided only basic information: “CD,” which I assume means the file or stream being played is 16/44.1, or a squiggly sign for MQA, next to the song’s countdown ticker.

BluOS, though, was easy to navigate, and I never saw an error message or experienced a glitch that left me music-less or frustrated. It simply worked, and worked simply, every time. The app let me traverse decades, genres, and musicians, making the transition between choices almost as quick as my thoughts.

Parasound HINT 6 Integrated Amplifier: Review

June 17, 2022 Comments Off on Parasound HINT 6 Integrated Amplifier: Review

It’s very good at what it does but it doesn’t offer the resolution, resolving power, detail, or spaciousness of my RME/Pass Labs combination; it’s also less than 50% of the retail price of that combination so to expect it to outperform two of the best personal audio components currently available would be a rather steep hill to climb.

However, if I was in the market for a high-end integrated amplifier that could replace a $4,000 set of separates and deliver a lot of power, reliability, an excellent feature set including a plethora of input/output options — the Parasound HINT 6 Integrated Amplifier would be very high on my recommendation list.

When you consider how much it offers for $3,200 and how good it sounds — this is one of the best bargains right now in the high-end amplifier category. Parasound definitely delivers on its promise of sound quality and value for the money.

Eclipse TD307 Mk3 $750 Review

June 16, 2022 Comments Off on Eclipse TD307 Mk3 $750 Review

There’s much to be admired in Eclipse’s approach to speaker design. While there are obvious limitations by conventional standards – a lack of bass depth and dynamic punch are the most obvious in this case – there are equally areas of performance where the TD307 Mk3 stomp all over their conventional rivals. It comes down to how they are used and what your sonic priorities are. For the right person, these speakers will be hard to beat.

Charisma Audio Musiko Turntable $2500 Review

June 15, 2022 Comments Off on Charisma Audio Musiko Turntable $2500 Review

I can’t recall that listening with the Kronos Sparta was any more fun than listening with the Musiko, but then, my entire rig has come a long way since those days. Just switching from the complex ritual of cueing up a record on my hot-rodded LP12 with its mandatory periphery ring and heavy record weight to the simplicity of the Musiko (which didn’t get significantly better with a periphery ring), was value-added not just in dollars, but in serenity. No more Zen, no more mantra. The honor of the “biggest pain” is now bestowed upon getting the LP back in the sleeve.

If you’re stepping up from a Rega P3 or a Project Debut Pro you will have no idea of what I’m talking about here. You’ll just feel like the richest kid on the block with your new Musiko.

I had asked Bernard not to tell me the price of the table to give my mind free rein on assessing its value. I strongly suspected when listening to the first song with the Musiko that I would buy it. It was that dramatic of an improvement over what I was using. As I spent more time with it, I came to the conclusion, based on its sonic performance that the turntable alone would cost about $8000 to $8500 with a package deal with the Musiko tonearm coming in at just under $10,000. When I learned he was offering the turntable (without an arm) for $2995, I felt secretly embarrassed. But embarrassment is just a feeling, so I share it with you willingly because it conveys the value. It is a very fair price, if not an outright steal!

Where Am I?
