NAIM AUDIO UNITI NOVA INTEGRATED STREAMING AMPLIFIER MUSIC SERVER REVIEW
January 31, 2018 Comments Off on NAIM AUDIO UNITI NOVA INTEGRATED STREAMING AMPLIFIER MUSIC SERVER REVIEW
“As we went to press on this, Naim served up a beta version of its Roon ready software for testing. This adds an order of magnitude more ‘awesome’ to an already bursting bag of superlatives. Part of the reason Naim’s servers are so robust is the file system is a rigid hierarchy, which you don’t futz around with because it works so well. However, for those who don’t think in quite the same linear way, it can be frustrating (I’ve been told – the truth is once you have used Naim’s hierarchy for as long as I have, other systems seem convoluted and disorganised). Roon allows you to remove such file structures to the ‘forget about it’ part of your brain, and integrate your music into Roon’s music-led jaunt through the catalogue, seamlessly blending TIDAL with your own collection in almost any way you can think of, should you so desire.”

PS Audio Stellar M700 monoblock power amplifier $2998 Review
January 26, 2018 Comments Off on PS Audio Stellar M700 monoblock power amplifier $2998 Review
“DirectStream DAC, DirectStream Memory Player, DirectStream Junior DAC, Sprout integrated amplifier, BHK 250 stereo amplifier, BHK Mono 300 amplifier, BHK Signature preamplifier—PS Audio has been on a roll. That roll continues with the Stellar M700 power amplifier. I have had nothing but good experience with PS Audio products; still, with the Stellar M700, my expectations were exceeded. Having little sound of its own, the M700 delivered well-balanced reproduction that was always faithful to the music.

Bryston 14B³ Stereo Amplifier Review
January 24, 2018 Comments Off on Bryston 14B³ Stereo Amplifier Review
“When it was time for the Sonus faber Il Cremonese speakers to go home, I connected the 14B³ to my stock speaker system: the Vienna Acoustic Schonberg speakers in a 5.1 setup. Being so accustomed to this setup in my room, I could clearly hear the elevated clarity, dynamic range, and imaging I got with the 14B³ connected to the system. While not as impressive as the Il Cremonese, my Vienna Acoustics speakers displayed improved detail and weight in the midrange that I never thought possible with this speaker system. The Schonberg always possessed a smoothness and balanced character, and the Bryston did not take that away, but rather improved upon it with additional subtle sonic details.”

Wyred 4 Sound DAC2v2SE 10th Anniversary Review
January 21, 2018 Comments Off on Wyred 4 Sound DAC2v2SE 10th Anniversary Review
“Next comes the meticulous hand-matching of all components – a tedious process considering the plethora of discrete parts employed in the device. This, plus the various upgrades mentioned by Sarmento above, allows Wyred to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of their existing design. Nearly ten years of digital adventures come to fruition here – the best DAC Wyred knows how to make in the here and now.”

Constellation Audio Revelation Taurus Mono Amplifiers $39,000 Review
January 20, 2018 Comments Off on Constellation Audio Revelation Taurus Mono Amplifiers $39,000 Review
“Although the Revelation Taurus Monos’ high power was far more than the Dynaudios needed, as I was already reviewing them, I used the Taurus Monos for them anyway because of how well they controlled the speakers’ drivers, particularly the woofers, and how much detail they could provide. I felt as if I was giving the Fortys their best chance to shine — which they did, with hi-rez sound very transparent to what was on the recordings (save for the low bass). When that review is published, you’ll read that I describe the Forty as being one of the most neutral two-ways Dynaudio has ever made. I felt confident coming to that conclusion because I knew that the amps were contributing no colorations of their own, which makes them a great reviewing tool for speakers.”

Bryston 3B, 4B and 14B “Cubed” power amplifiers Review
January 11, 2018 Comments Off on Bryston 3B, 4B and 14B “Cubed” power amplifiers Review
“The 4B Cubed is more sonorous and tonally fuller than the old 3B ST, with a richer timbre. It is also more relaxed and has a more bloomy midrange, which makes it very forgiving in spite of its high resolution. The 4B Cubed might seem like overkill but it makes the Centaurs’ relatively humble woofer produce deeper bass than ever before. Importantly, although the Centaurs are really revealing in the treble, they portrayed nothing but pure, sweet treble from the 4B Cubed.”

Pass Labs XA25 amplifier $4,900 Review
January 10, 2018 Comments Off on Pass Labs XA25 amplifier $4,900 Review
“Priced at $4,900 or £4,000, the XA25 is the most affordable of Pass Labs’ power amps. If you’re an audiophile looking for your next amp, is 25 watts enough? Sure, it’s easy to err on the side of more watts, but what will you be missing in terms of clarity? Sometimes less turns out to be more. ”

Constellation Audio Revelation Taurus Mono Amplifiers $39,000 Review
January 8, 2018 Comments Off on Constellation Audio Revelation Taurus Mono Amplifiers $39,000 Review
“Playing these two longtime reference recordings sent me down a rabbit hole. When I listened to The Trinity Session yet again, I was struck by how natural Margo Timmins’s voice sounded, and by all the air I could hear around it — a small but significant increase in resolution and clarity from what I’d heard with other amps. In The Mission, the sound of the woodwind instruments grabbed my attention — a breathy quality I hadn’t noticed before that made them sound more real, with a bit more presence. After having heard both recordings so many times over the years, I was surprised to hear something new. Which makes me think that while I’ve already spent several thousand words describing these amps, there may be still more to say about them — a telltale indication of a great hi-fi product.”
