Octave Audio V 80 SE integrated amplifier Review
September 18, 2017 Comments Off on Octave Audio V 80 SE integrated amplifier Review
“The Octave Audio V 80 SE is one unusual integrated amplifier. It packs a wallop, is perhaps the single most transparent and neutral machine ever to grace my Greenwich Village hi-fi rig, and is so acute to the source that I find myself adjusting the volume for every record. The V 80 SE lacked the tonal color, warmth, and shapeliness of textures I’ve come to love from my Shindo separates, and it could sometimes unleash hard upper-register attacks. But the Octave excelled with a different mien, a different style.

PIONEER A-70DA INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW

”
“To the A-70DA’s credit, they didn’t give me any early indication that the A-70DA focuses on any one genre. So, moving further into my music library with a more open (and quite frankly, more curious) mind, I already had a very good feeling about the result.”

Audio Research Foundation VT80 Stereo Amplifier $8000 Review
September 2, 2017 Comments Off on Audio Research Foundation VT80 Stereo Amplifier $8000 Review
” y comparison of the two ARCs’ sounds quickly devolved into nitpicking. Immediately, the D300 came across as sounding not harsh, but brighter in the highs — high-pitched guitars, sibilants, and cymbals all sounded a bit more forward and drew more attention to themselves. Through the D300, the voices of Amy Winehouse and Bono lost some of the beautiful three-dimensionality they had through the VT80, and sounded rawer in detail and flattened in emotional range. When I tried to approximate the volume level of a rock concert, the D300 had greater deep-bass presence that I could feel through its stronger characterization of bass guitar, and the bigger-sounding drums and bass pedals in the Rush recording — no doubt because of its much higher power output.”

VALVET A4 CLASS A MONOBLOCKS 6890 per pair REVIEW
August 28, 2017 Comments Off on VALVET A4 CLASS A MONOBLOCKS 6890 per pair REVIEW
“With the Valvet monoblocks I found myself enjoying some of the most coherent, balanced sound I’ve heard in my listening room. Bass notes are present, separate enough from the midrange to allow you to follow instruments easily without ever thinking they were dominant or disproportionate. Midrange is simply magical, with voices, strings and keys reproduced with a level of reality that makes you relax into the music. Upper frequency resolution is not softened as might be anticipated if the amps were to seem ‘tube-like’ but instead were clean and sufficient to serve musical purpose without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. In combination, you hear full-bodied, realistic, musical instruments and performers with appropriate dynamic punch and swing.”

MARK LEVINSON, VIENNA ACOUSTICS, CHORD COMPANY SYSTEM REVIEW

“This cable really lets the signal breathe, pushing the musical performance to the fore and the system itself well into the background. So, the bigger the system’s performance envelope the more effectively it is able to disappear – and this system has a big envelope, both in terms of bandwidth and dynamic headroom: big is no problem, loud is no sweat. In fact, the presentation is so open, the tonality so natural and devoid of edge or harshness, and the dynamics so uninhibited and engaging that it likes nothing better than to have its volume control well advanced. Unlike a lot of systems, you don’t have to play this one loud, but boy are you going to get full value when you do.”

Audio Research GSi75 Integrated Amplifier $16,000 Review

“All but the most maniacal headphone listener will not need an outboard headphone amplifier. The GSi75 has much more sheer drive than is necessary to achieve the volume level you require, and the level of refinement is exceptional. Going through all of my favorite prog and electronica tracks made for an aural playground with the GSi75. Cheech and Chong’s Big Bambu was not only a great throwback, but fully illustrated the high level of imaging prowess that placed the people speaking everywhere in the room. Big fun.”

” With a more substantial build budget, the amplifier designer can specify a larger transformer, a more sophisticated power supply, higher quality capacitors, more tightly specified resistors and better output devices from which comes the possibility of higher output power, wider bandwidth, faster slew rate or higher damping factor.”

Conrad-Johnson • Classic Sixty-Two SE Stereo Amplifier $5750 Review
August 15, 2017 Comments Off on Conrad-Johnson • Classic Sixty-Two SE Stereo Amplifier $5750 Review
“Concerned that I should try a conventional speaker with the Classic Sixty-Two SE, I packed up the amp and took it to Kent Johnson’s house. Kent recently retired from reviewing at Positive Feedback and has a nice listening space featuring Revel F208 speakers driven by Primare electronics fed by an Esoteric universal player. At 250Wpc, the Primare amp has no trouble controlling the Revel’s dual 8″ woofers, but could the Classic Sixty-Two SE keep up? After a brief listening session to acclimate our ears to the sound, we swapped out the Primare for the C-J amp. I knew we wouldn’t have as much ultimate volume moving from 250 watts to 60, but neither of us listen too loudly, so my fears weren’t warranted. I was pleased that the Classic Sixty-Two SE sound was instantly recognizable and similar to my initial reactions after break-in.”
