“I learned that the M-900u uses v.4.0 of Luxman’s Only Distortion Negative Feedback (ODNF) circuitry, which they say reduces high-frequency distortion. Luxman says that the amp’s circuit boards are creamy white because they don’t use a green solder mask, which the engineers feel mucks up the sound.

“Talking of ancillaries, Arcam also supplied their compact $699 irDAC along with the A19, just to underline the amplifier’s thoroughly modern outlook. Based on a Burr-Brown PCM1796 DAC chip and powered from a 12.0V wall-wart supply, the unit’s simple yet stylish exterior conceals a surprisingly sophisticated circuit, with no fewer than eight independently regulated internal power supplies and remarkably low jitter. It offers two S/PDIF inputs on RCA, two optical inputs, an asynchronous USB and a direct iPod connection (also via USB) that takes digital directly from the portable source, all switchable on the unit itself or from a remote control that’s similar to the A19’s, but will also drive the transport and track-select functions on a range of PC/Mac devices and more recent iDevices”

“I matched the speaker levels precisely using a professional AudioControl real-time analyzer/SPL meter, lab-grade mic, and the AudiControl Maestro pre/pro’s onboard test signal generator. I find that the cheap handheld meters don’t do a good job in accurately measuring the SPL level of low bass. Thus, the pro analyzer/SPL unit allows me to precisely match the speaker levels, which makes a big difference in clean multichannel performance.”

“Soundstaging and imaging weren’t the M-900u’s only strengths. The Luxman’s tonal balance was magic to my ears, and a perfect match for the speakers I primarily used it with: Sonus Faber’s Olympica III and Revel’s Performa3 F206. From top to bottom, the M-900u was as neutral as you’d expect a topflight solid-state amp to sound, and without the clinical or sterile quality that plagues some solid-state gear”

Unconstrained, dynamic, coherent presentation – that’s the shortest description of Statement’s performance. It is able to trigger amazing emotions related to the music one listens to, that make one want to absorb sound with one’s whole body. Treble’s character reminded me that of the best tube amplifier”
