“The gains in transparency and resolution are significant, with little of the loss of body, dynamics and drive that usually results when we use a suitably specified DAC in such a role.”

” When comparing the zdac v.2 to the ESS Sabre chip units Benchmark DAC2-D, Mytek Stereo 192-DSD and Resonessence ConceroHP, the zdac’s tight, tightly focused signature was more apparent in headphone amp A/B comparisons. The Benchmark and Mytek had more warmth to the mid and bass frequencies, and a bit more space around the instruments but again, I liked the analytical persona of the Parasound.”

“I always find digital sound difficult to describe compared to tubes, where the varying topologies have their usually distinctive sound. Not with Black. The system’s sound was easy to describe. Every time.”

“At the time I concluded that there was no DAC that sounded “ideal” to me and that no matter what, I would need to design the overall system to address each DACs shortcomings. However, I found that so long as I could improve PRAT, it bothered me more when bass sounded too thin and the presentation lacked body”

“Listening started with the AudioQuest Diamond USB cable. This would turn out to be the best match, but before I reached that conclusion I tried various other cables. The Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7 offered a more forward sound with a bolder character, but although I did like the Wireworld’s fuller bass, I found that it took away too much subtlety and refinement. ”

” I had taken out the 6922 stock tubes and had rolled in a pair of NOS 1957 Mullard tubes. Even before the tube swap, the KD-2000 performed at a very high level. However, the tube swap took this DAC to an even more superlative place in regards to high-end extension, airiness, purity of color, and tones of different instruments”

“The D1’s USB input supports asynchronous data transmission at rates of up to 32/384 PCM, 2.8MHz DSD, and 5.6MHz double DSD. Transmission of 2.8MHz DSD is also supported by the ES-LINK4 and optical inputs. The inclusion of native DSD processing corrects a significant source of annoyance for owners of Esoteric’s prior flagship DAC, the D-02: while many of the inexpensive flavor-of-the-month DACs could handle native DSD, the D-02 could not.”

“The end result is needlessly bulky to the point of almost being comical. In defense of Asus, even the legendary Bryston had something of a similar issue when they launched their BHA-1 headphone amp with the wrong gender outputs on the front panel. It seems there is “technically” no standard for this type of thing, though browsing HeadFi for 5 minutes is really all it – See more at: http://headphone.guru/asus-essence-iii-dac/#sthash.mmhXj3rX.dpuf”
