Cayin HA-1A MK2 tube headphone amp Review

March 8, 2017 § 1 Comment

READ HERE

” Tube amps live or die by the quality of their output transformers (unless we’re talking OTL designs, of course). I wouldn’t expect Cayin to cram premium Lundahl or Cinemag pieces in there while maintaining that $999 sticker. Cayin’s compromise is to source its own EI core output transformers using Z11 grade silicon steel and a proprietary layered winding configuration. The EI core power transformer is of similar construction, with Cayin describing it as a “large-capacity, low-leakage design.” The goal here is competent — if not exotic — components in a well-thought-out design, making the most of available resources while keeping that reasonable price intact.”

SENNHEISER HDVD800 $2,200 REVIEW

“HD800S maintains a more intimate stage structure, but HD800 seems to take the advantage in terms of the stage depth. On the other hand, HD800S has a wider stage with a better separation, while HD800 provides a more airy presentation.”

Pass Labs HPA-1 headphone amplifier $3500 Review

February 23, 2017 Comments Off on Pass Labs HPA-1 headphone amplifier $3500 Review

Read Here

“The HPA-1 sells for $3500 which is on the low-end of the Pass Labs scale, but nonetheless, near the top of the heap in headphone market at large. Yes, I can name a handful of headphone amplifiers with higher prices. That’s akin to pointing out a $150,000 pair of speakers as being more pricey than a set going for $80k. Both are on the extreme upper end of the spectrum, regardless of the difference.”

BENCHMARK MEDIA DAC3 HGC REVIEW

February 22, 2017 Comments Off on BENCHMARK MEDIA DAC3 HGC REVIEW

“£2,349.00 is not cheap. I will not lie, I was anxious at first, especially in regards to the slightly less expensive competition. But Benchmark did not fail me. The converted sound is rich in dynamics, crystal clear and completely transparent. Looking at the complete package, the DAC3 (HGC) offers everything one would need. It would be a shame to only use it as a desktop DAC to amp headphones.”

CHORD ELECTRONICS DAVE DAC/HEADPHONE AMP REVIEW

February 7, 2017 Comments Off on CHORD ELECTRONICS DAVE DAC/HEADPHONE AMP REVIEW

READ HERE

“As I’ve said, there are rival products, some of which turn in a different sound, and some of those sounds you might prefer over the DAVE. And there are some digital converters that come so close to the DAVE’s performance that you’d struggle to hear the difference in some settings. But the DAVE will likely show its hand sooner or later. It may be in dealing with a format, or outputting to a super insightful system or headphone, but the DAVE is a tough act to better all round.”

” The Bryston BHA-1 is an impeccably designed and solidly built amplification device for speakers that you just happen to wear on your head. It has a fastidiously clean and neutral sound quality with an abundance of power and connectivity options that will allow almost any headphone to shine on its own merits, or lack thereof. In a time of increasing function and multipurpose usability in more and more products, it is nice to see something like the BHA-1 that is designed strictly to perform a single dedicated function with utmost precision and reliability.”
