“Moving on I do believe this cable is a well priced, and great accessory for the 99 Classics if you use a DAP with balanced output. I always found the mid-bass bloom on the 99 Classics to be a little overwhelming at times, this cable does not get rid of it completely but is sure is an improvement. What it brings to the table is increased control to the lower frequencies, making that bloom slightly less noticeable, and everything is a bit more precise. Moving on to the midrange you gain a little better air and separation around instruments, it lifts a slight veil off the sound. Vocals now sound a bit more realistic due to the more controlled low end, and the sound is a bit more open.”

Campfire Audio Cascade Cloth Pads Review

“Bass is most changed and strikes as sounding more even with more defined notes. It is less present overall, a prime contributor towards the cloth pad’s more balanced sound in general. Sub-bass extension is reduced a touch, lacking the visceral slam of the better sealing leather pads. Most notably, the pads attenuate the headphone’s notable mid-bass hump. As mid-bass no longer holds as much focus, the headphones sound appreciably more linear, coherent and less bloated. Control actually comes across as slightly reduced with slightly longer decay and hazier edged transients. Still, bass speed remains admirable and reduction in note focus is counteracted by reduced mid-bass presence that provides a cleaner tone and greater separation and definition regardless.”

“The bulk of my listening was done with a Mytek Brooklyn digital converter and headphone amp, which sounded fine, but after switching over to the much less expensive Schiit Valhalla 2 tube headphones amp, the Auteur’s charms were hard to ignore on Paul Simon’s beautifully recorded In the Blue Light album. The lushness of the tube amp really clicked with the Auteur, and it had a more dynamic kick over the Valhalla 2. The Brooklyn and Auteur combination was more transparent, but the Valhalla 2 had more soul. I like soul.”

Once again MrSpeakers has hit it out of the park with the ETHER2 Planar Magnetic Headphones. Well deserving of the name flagship this top of the line headphone offers incremental improvement over all previous planar models while maintaining the natural tonality and musicality that MrSpeakers is known for. When it comes to music reproduction the ETHER2 is a one size fits all headphone. That is to say that it has the deep bass extension and dynamics for dance music and rock, the detail, soundstage, transparency and clarity for classical, the warm musicality for vocal music and the speed and tight bottom end for jazz. If you are looking for a reference quality headphone, there is no need to spend three or four thousand dollars, this is the one. I would happily include the MrSpeakers ETHER2 among to the top five or so headphones I have heard and they currently rank number two among my favorites right behind the VOCE.

“My last track was actually my first track as I used it to compare the different MrSpeakers headphones using the QP2R as well as the different cables, but chose to revisit it at the end when talking about the QP2R performance, and that would be “And You And I — I. Cord of Life, II. Eclipse, III. The Preacher the Teacher, IV. Apocalypse” from Yes’ Close to the Edge (DSD). I was floored by the huge soundstage, the lack of sibilant hiss during certain vocal passages and the deep throaty bass as well as the clarity and detail.

I guess my tests wouldn’t be complete without some word on the new VIVO cable, it is definitely less microphonic and I believe there was a slight improvement in bass extension and resolution.”
