ABYSS AB-1266 PHI CC HEADPHONES $4995 REVIEW

“Next up I selected a more bass intensive recording. As I’ve always felt that the Abyss headphones have offered some of the very best bass quality and impact I’ve heard from a pair of headphones, I wanted to specifically see just how the new ear-pads affected this already impressive performance. “Lateralus” by the progressive metal band Tool was my choice to perform this specific comparison. As soon as the rumble kicked in from “The Patient” I could tell that the bass had changed slightly; but definitely for the better. The same depth and rumble was certainly present, but what I was able to discern was that some of the bloom with the original ear-pads was tightened up and made a bit more concise. Overall, as fantastic as the bass is with the original configuration, I found that the presentation now had among the tightest and most detailed bass there is in personal audio. To hear this level of depth, detail and texturing, I used to think you’d have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a full two-channel stereo setup. Simply put, when you incorporate their expansive sound-staging, these headphones offer the closest speaker-like presentation I’ve heard in personal audio and the new ear-pads help the Abyss AB-1266 Phi / Phi CC headphones achieve a level that I didn’t think was possible.

HIFIMAN SUNDARA HEADPHONES REVIEW

“If you think headphone technology and price/performance ratios aren’t changing, you haven’t done enough sampling of what’s out there today.
The HIFIMAN Sundara headphones have a clean, engaging sound. On the best quality audio, they really offer compelling performance. They are comfortable to wear, did not fatigue me in extended listening sessions, and could handle complex orchestral material and heavy rock without sounding congested.”

Focal Elegia headphone $900 Review

“If you crave high-resolution sound, Elegia will put a smile on your face. It certainly did when I streamed Let’s Eat Grandma’s spectacular I, Gemini album on Tidal. This pop music’s delicate percussion, piano, and airy effects sounded remarkably clear and floated free of the headphones’ ear cups. Open yes, but not as spacious as the open-back Focal models mentioned above.”

Campfire Audio Cascade Headphones $799 Review
October 24, 2018 Comments Off on Campfire Audio Cascade Headphones $799 Review
“The real magic with the Cascade happened in the midrange when I played Diana Krall’s Live in Paris collection: her vocals sounded so full of life. There was something really special about Krall’s intimate connection with the microphone; it was as if there was no mic at all. The Cascade was making all the right moves, rendering her exquisite touch on the piano keys, her dynamics, and most importantly her sense of swing.
With a sound that seduces rather than dazzles with detail, the Campfire Audio Cascade isn’t equipped to compete in the high-resolution audio sweepstakes. While its treble isn’t soft or rolled-off, the rich midrange and voluptuous- sounding bass are the Cascade’s star attractions. That’s enough for me, and it might also be enough for you.

QUAD ERA-1 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES
October 9, 2018 Comments Off on QUAD ERA-1 PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES
“The Quad ERA-1 is a headphone you could comfortably take on the go and listen to through a DAP or smart phone, so it was imperative to break out the QP2R and take in a few tracks. I selected the Alter Natives a progressive/punk band of the eighties on the SST label (24/96 kHz vinyl rip) who provide an intense cacophony of bass guitar, electric guitar, percussion, flute and saxophone requiring a great deal of speed and dynamic range to reproduce legibly. “Over The Counter – Culture” really brought out the phase coherency and detail of the ERA-1. The QP2R and the Quads proved to be a synergistic combination, though I did need to switch to “high gain” to get full dynamic range, I suspect a balanced cable would have enhanced the performance even more.”

Grado GS2000e Headphone Review
October 7, 2018 Comments Off on Grado GS2000e Headphone Review
“Both the Chord and the PMC are extremely accurate devices which effectively get out if the way and let the transducer do the talking. They reveal the Grado to be an almost sublimely balanced device. Absolutely nothing at any point of the frequency response feels overemphasised or pushed back and this makes for a listening experience that is exceptionally enjoyable regardless of what you choose to listen to on them. I started one listening session with the considered and lovely Kidal by Tamikrest with its effortless combination of North African instrumentation with rock sensibilities and finished with Polygon by Battle Tapes which is to delicacy what John Candy was to hang gliding. At no stage did the Grados feel like anything other than the perfect tool for the job.”
