“To give you a handful of musical examples that illustrate the Dharma’s ability to serve up ‘magic on demand’, let me begin with the track ‘Purple Haze’ from bassist Michael Manring’s Drastic Measures [Windham Hill, CD]. Manring performs his homage to Hendrix on a Zon fretless electric bass that, when slapped or tapped, can produce thunderclap-like low bass transients, but that also is—in Manring’s hands—capable of brilliant, shimmering high frequency overtones. The Dharma deftly tackles the track with an unexpected (and frankly, rarely heard) combination of dynamic gusto, wide-range frequency response, and a quality of almost ethereal delicacy.”

” Put them on, and and you’ll find it hard to believe the Utopias weigh nearly 500 grams. Due to careful design of the headband, they really don’t feel heavy once they’re on. There’s no pressure on the top of your head or over the ears, with no uncomfortable “hanging.” Instead, they almost feel part of your skull.

THE BEST PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES – TOP 10

September 1, 2016 Comments Off on THE BEST PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES – TOP 10

” Planar magnetic headphones and their benefits are well known amongst the audiophile community but perhaps not so much to the casual observer. Planar headphones lie somewhere in between dynamic driver headphones (eg. Sennheiser HD800) and Electrostatic headphones (eg Kingsound KS-H1, Stax etc). The use of an ultra fast moving and super thin diaphragm set between two magnets means you can step over some of the limitations imposed in dynamic headphones. If you want to know more about the technology it is well worth reading Tyll Herstens explanation of how planar magnetic headphones work over at Inner Fidelity. ”

HIFIMAN EDITION S REVIEW

” The sound signature of the Edition S logically changes when you turn it in to an open headphone but in both cases the Edition S has a more musical and fun tuning than it has a “reference” one as many call it. Bass and mids have bigger body than in a neutral tuned headphone and the treble is soft and easy to listen to yet at the same time you get a good level of detail and clarity while the sound
stage is more than just ok. I would say the character of the Edition S tilts more to the warmer side but this isn’t an overly warm or colored headphone.”
