” Through my HD800S Sennheiser headphones, this is truly an experience and I have to say that the BeoPlay H7’s had their road cut out for them as this was a very high mark. For this album I used both the lossless version on Tidal and my DSD version played through my Astell & Kern AK240SS portable DAP (via Bluetooth). Right off the bat as the performers started to warm up and the audience chatter filled my ears, I could tell that the H7s would most certainly be up for this challenging recording”

” Pitting the LCD-4 against the stellar Hifiman HE1000 headphone (also a planar magnetic design), it was clear from the get-go that they’re two very different-sounding headphones. The HE1000 presented a cooler tonal balance than the LCD-4, but it also unfurled a larger, more spacious soundstage; it disappears more. The LCD-4, meanwhile, definitely put a bit more meat on the bones of the sound of acoustic instruments and vocals, so they sounded more like themselves. Both headphones’ deep-bass, ear-massaging capabilities are extraordinary; there’s no winner down there. Treble sparkle, air, and delicacy are also very close, but the LCD-4’s are more effortlessly clear. I don’t know how Audeze did it, but the LCD-4 delivers extreme clarity, while maintaining a soul-satisfyingly rich balance”

“All in all, the M400 sounds refined and clear, with bass that is definitely goosed up just a tad. I’m not normally a fan of overemphasized bass, but it’s done tastefully here on the M400, and I rather enjoyed it. And that pretty much sums up my feelings about this headphone: The M400 strikes a perfect balance of comfort, value, sound quality, portability, and style.”

” The Mi headphones are extremely easy to drive be it with my Nexus 6 phone’s headphone output or my laptop. I also tried it with the Geekout 1000 alone and with the O2 headamp but decided i like the Geekout 1000 alone better as it is slightly less veiled. With the PC running a sample of 24-bit high definition tracks in native sampling to the Geekout, I tested a few familiar tracks. The Sennheiser HD650 will serve as a reference that the Mi would be pitted against.”

” I reunited the Oppo with the DragonFly for some valedictory listening. The PM-2 could conjure the weight of Evgeny Kissin’s recording of Liszt’s “Mephisto” Waltz No. 1, from Kissin Plays Liszt (ripped from CD, like all of my Apple Lossless files). Timbre and overtones were perfectly natural. An orchestral selection—Claudio Abbado leading the Berlin Philharmonic in the Scherzo from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (FLAC 96/24)—revealed that the Oppo was not just smooth, but warm, enabling a high volume setting that accommodated Beethoven’s wide dynamic swings. Kettledrums thundered in the left with plenty of bass definition and control.”
