Oppo PM-2 Headphone Review

” I reunited the Oppo with the DragonFly for some valedictory listening. The PM-2 could conjure the weight of Evgeny Kissin’s recording of Liszt’s “Mephisto” Waltz No. 1, from Kissin Plays Liszt (ripped from CD, like all of my Apple Lossless files). Timbre and overtones were perfectly natural. An orchestral selection—Claudio Abbado leading the Berlin Philharmonic in the Scherzo from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (FLAC 96/24)—revealed that the Oppo was not just smooth, but warm, enabling a high volume setting that accommodated Beethoven’s wide dynamic swings. Kettledrums thundered in the left with plenty of bass definition and control.”

“I also tried the T1 second generation phones with the Apogee Groove (review forthcoming). I’m happy to report that the diminutive, USB powered Groove can drive these 600 Ohm phones with no problem and the results are quite satisfying. More in the Groove review.”

AUDEZE SINE $500 Review

April 25, 2016 Comments Off on AUDEZE SINE $500 Review

“What blows my mind here is that the headphone requires no amplification at all. Get yourself a good USB DAC with low power output and noise and enjoy, you’ll never need more than what decent powered portable players like the iBasso DX90 or the new Luxury and Precision L3 have to offer. In fact, when I plug the Sine into my full size amplifiers, the Heron 5 from Airist Audio for example, I am met with a sound that I actually feel to be over-driven…and rightly so. Even the lowest output setting on the Heron 5 is beastly overkill what for the Sine was designed to be used with, which really was just a cell phone or decent portable music device. My iBasso DX90 with Rockbox is greatly preferred over usage with my L3 from Luxury and Precision, as well as all of my full size amps. However, I recently got to hear the Sine at a meet with Cavalli’s Liquid Carbon, which is an amplifier that has a good low output functionality for iems and efficient headphones. Sufficed to say, the pairing was just silly in terms of how great it was, truly silly.”

MRSPEAKERS THE ETHER $1,500 REVIEW

“It’s a $1500 headphone and for that money you do have a few choices in the market though only one closed headphone in this category and that is the Audeze LCD-XC. The next nearest competitor to the Ether C? Well that’s the Alpha Prime and they do not make them anymore. The next stop down is the closed Oppo PM-3 and that is a pretty stiff drop and a whole different market thrust. Outside of that well if you are at a crossroads over whether to choose open or closed then you have a ton of flagships out there, both planar and dynamic ready to vie for your cash.”

SENNHEISER MOMENTUM WIRELESS HEADPHONES REVIEW

April 21, 2016 Comments Off on SENNHEISER MOMENTUM WIRELESS HEADPHONES REVIEW

” The Momentum Wireless headphones consistently paired quickly and painlessly with our devices of choice; at home we used them paired to Yamaha’s MusicCast system, and on the road with our iPod touch and an Oppo Android phone. Their sound is open and airy, with a lovely balance across the frequency range, a nice touch of bass emphasis and delivering rich and real vocals. It simply doesn’t sound like a Bluetooth headphone. When Sennheiser tried this trick with its Urbanite XL, the Bluetooth version exaggerated the original softness and bass emphasis for a result that was, to our ears, too woofy to enjoy. With the Momentum, none of that — this was a highly enjoyable and high quality listen”

Stax SR-L500 electrostatic headphones Review

April 15, 2016 Comments Off on Stax SR-L500 electrostatic headphones Review

” As much as I like the LCD 2 it was no match for the SR-L500’s uber clarity, the LCD 2 was less transparent, less vivid and spacious than the SR-L500. But the LCD 2’s bass was deeper and more powerful, and dynamic impact were all better than the SR-L500’s. So the LCD 2 was a better choice for rock, and the SR-L500 excelled with acoustic music of all genres. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the Black Keys’ low-down dirty blues over the SR-L500, I did, but listening over the LCD 2 headphones was a more visceral experience.”
