HIFIMAN EDITION X PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES REVIEW
April 12, 2016 Comments Off on HIFIMAN EDITION X PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONES REVIEW
” I happened to have an appropriate aftermarket balanced cable floating around and was able to attach the Edition X headphones, via said cable, to the balanced output of my OPPO HA-1 headphone amp/DAC. Voila it works, and very well too! The only difference I could discern between balanced and unbalanced mode was just louder operation at a given volume level via the balanced cable.”

Puro Sound Labs BT5200 Review
April 10, 2016 Comments Off on Puro Sound Labs BT5200 Review
” The imaging on this recording did in fact take a good step forward so I was heartened to see that these headphones could scale with better hardware and recordings. The overall presentation still offered a warm and seductive performance that really drew me in and put a smile on my face. The layering of the bass/mids/treble was done quite well and dare I say, even on par with my favourite on-ear headphones the Beyerdynamics T51p headphones (but these come in at almost 3X the price). The final bits of refinement and clarity (especially comfort and overall build quality) still go to the T51p’s, but the BT5200s were not far behind and for those on a shoe string budget, I cannot recommend these more highly! ”

SENNHEISER HD800S HEADPHONES REVIEW
April 9, 2016 Comments Off on SENNHEISER HD800S HEADPHONES REVIEW
” As accurate as they ever were. The highs are notably detailed without being sibilant – the HD800s can be listened to at decent volumes without severely piercing the ears. The famous 5.5-6k peak has been finally smoothed out, which leaves an overall smoother listening experience. The famous crisp and detailed highs of the HD800 still remain, and compliment the rest of the spectrum perfectly.”

Abyss AB-1266 Planar Magnetic Headphones Review
April 5, 2016 Comments Off on Abyss AB-1266 Planar Magnetic Headphones Review
“Soundscape is fantastic as well, easily rivaling my reference HD800. The transition between individual image placements across the soundstage with big drum rolls is absolutely seamless. You can easily close your eyes and imagine the placement of each individual drum, with zero obfuscation. Listening to The Bucky Pizzarelli Trio’s “Three for All” on 24-bit/96kHz FLAC, the soundscape feels transparent and borderless. Each of the three guitarists occupies a distinct space, and it feels very much like you are right there in the room sitting with them. If I had to nitpick, the front and rear depth toward the center of the stage could be just a pinch deeper, but this is really splitting hairs.”

VERISONIX N500 REVIEW
April 3, 2016 Comments Off on VERISONIX N500 REVIEW
” Both it and the N501 share the same spec’d driver set: a single electret and 40mm dynamic with sensitivities of 120dB @32Ω. I’ve found no meaningful difference in volume between the two at the same output voltage settings, meaning the N500 gets good and loud any at decent current-to-voltage ratios, but may start to crackle at lower volume pot settings than insensitive headphones. For my purposes, the following sources and amps did most of the driving grunt work: iPhone 6, Cowon Plenue D, Lynx Audio Hilo, LinnengerG Maestro. Despite the N500’s incredible sensitivity, no source or amp I paired with it hisses. Wonderful. For reference, a volume range of 40 – 50 was enough for anything through the Lynix Hilo, meaning that the N500, like the N501, is just a bit more sensitive than the Grado PS1000.”

Audeze’s Sine $449 Review
March 31, 2016 Comments Off on Audeze’s Sine $449 Review
” While the soundstage is obviously smaller and more intimate than on open-backed headphones, the Sine through Cipher have more dimension than through the standard cable. Of course, the use of any headphone amp would enhance the sound quality of the Sine, but most other headphone amps aren’t the size of a stick of gum. That a 24-bit, high-resolution DAC/amp/DSP could be crammed into the space where the remote and mic live on a cable and somehow still make a clearly discernable improvement in sound is amazing, and the kind of thing that makes me glad I live in the future.”
