” Your music loving friends that don’t aspire to be or insist on degenerating into audiophiles are going to love the performance of the Model 4s. An emotionally engaging experience is offered that includes pretty exceptional macrodynamic contrasts from such a small speaker, making them a finish line speaker in medium to small rooms. They do “deep bass” which is a holy grail for some, but do it with a measure of subtlety. ”

Wilson Audio Specialties Alexx loudspeaker $109,000 Review

“The single pair of binding posts for connecting the entire Alexx to a power amplifier—three other pairs of binding posts, for the midrange and treble drivers, accept the spade lugs with which the crossover’s wiring looms are terminated—are low on the bass bin’s rear panel, but higher than on the Alexandria XLF, where they’re too close to the floor for the comfort of thick, bulky speaker cables. Sometimes I wonder if speaker and amplifier makers even try to hook up their products in real-world situations.

Monitor Audio PL200 II Floorstanding Speaker Review

May 6, 2017 Comments Off on Monitor Audio PL200 II Floorstanding Speaker Review

“The PL200 II is a beautiful, well-engineered speaker that looks, sounds, and measures like Monitor Audio put years of work into it. Its strengths are terrific bass response, clear midrange, clean and unfatiguing treble, and a realistic sense of space. It doesn’t sound as dramatic and exciting as some exotic audiophile speakers, but that seems to be by design. Those who value natural, unhyped sound over audio pyrotechnics will love the PL200 II. ”

KEF LS50 Wireless Loudspeakers $2199 Review

“That the LS50 Wireless are rather grand, I would hope you understood by now—I can’t think of any component in recent memory that has been this much fun to unbox, setup and take around the house, room to room so to speak, identifying its various commitments to multi-room, multi-condition sound. My Sony TV and Playstation sounded better than ever via Toslink leash; Bluetooth either via superior aptX or standard brew, sounded equally great.”

” The ML could also dig deeper than the KEF. The very deepest bass in “Rock You Gently,” from the Warnes disc, was definitely less pronounced through the KEFs, making its sound seem a bit lightweight in comparison — it was missing the song’s subsonic foundation. The KEF’s lack of subterranean bass on this track tended to make Warnes’s voice more prominent in the mix — which was not a bad thing, as even the MLs couldn’t match the KEF’s ultrasmooth, ultrarefined midrange. In songs that have plenty of good but not superdeep acoustic bass, such as Adam Cohen’s “Love Is,” it was harder to tell the difference between the two speakers — but I still give the nod to the Classic ESL 9, which sounded slightly faster and tighter.”

ELAC’s Uni-Fi BS U5 $750 Review

“Initial impressions peg the U5 as a fast and nimble performer; quick on their feet but packing a lighter overall punch than the LS50. One might also mis-conclude that the ELAC’s bass goes deeper. That is, until a run through Shed’s The Final Experiment reveals it as instead better separated and more clearly defined than via the little red roosters.”

“Cymbals and other percussion have bite, and bass at 40 Hz was solid in my fairly small listening room. The opening of Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben was rich and redolent leaving me very impressed with not only the bass performance but its resolution. And just like the midrange and the treble, it was coherent with each tessitura.”

Air Tight Bonsai AL-05 Mini-Monitor Review

“I feel compelled to share one more notable listening example: Analogue Productions’ superb 45rpm reissue of Muddy Waters’ Folk Singer, which sounded terrific with the Bonsais, “Good Morning School Girl” and “You Gonna Need My Help,” in particular. The rapid-fire attacks of Clifton Jones’ snare were suitably snappy; Muddy’s vocals were realistic and reproduced with the slight reverb I’m accustomed to hearing; the Bonsais even recovered some studio ambience, drawing me deeper into a classic taped more than half a century ago. Imaging was also impressive, as was the resolution of the details and textures of these spare arrangements—the guitar strings’ subtle squeaks, the growls of Muddy’s voice.”

Quad 2812 electrostatic speaker Review

“The Quad is comparatively limited in terms of colossal output. A 90dB decibel level is attainable for the Quad but compression begins to set in incrementally. The Quad’s aforementioned point-source capability, therefore, does not lend itself to excessive loudness but judicious enjoyment. There is nay a speaker I know of, capable of such extended frequency range and instrument dimensionality in such economical physique. At medium listening level, the tonal realism of instruments was so remarkable that blasting it would’ve disrupted the intricate experiencing process. The Quad ESL’s lower horizontal stance also delineated a lower soundstage from normal listening positions, hence the 2nd floor Balcony seat’s perspective. I can see the reason people stacked their older Quads.”

RAIDHO D-1.1 STANDMOUNT LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW

April 25, 2017 Comments Off on RAIDHO D-1.1 STANDMOUNT LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW

” For those of us with limited room and a love of listening to music through quality audio, the Danish company Raidho offer notable, if costly, salvation and the D-1.1 is the flagship of these small, supremely endowed models. Designed by Michael Børresen, the D-1.1 is the latest version of what began life as the D1. But, appearances can be deceptive and what we are really looking at here is virtually a new speaker that shares only the main cabinet and the tweeter with the D1. The baffle and back plate are new as are the crossover and rear connections, while the 115mm mid/bass driver has undergone major modifications with a new motor structure and surround. This has resulted in a 1.5dB rise in efficiency.”
