“Record after record, digital file or CD, instrumental or vocal repertoire, the Raidho’s never let me down. Each track I played uncovered a musical line, mark of expression or plain old emotional experience hitherto unheard. Quite remarkable. This time, no churlish attitude, and the XT-1 earns its Audiophilia Star Component Award.’

” Soundstaging has scale and depth and whilst these speakers certainly don’t disappear, you are presented with a wholly believable and realistic portrayal of the performance. Just play the DSD version of Jazz at the Pawn Shop on the Evolutions and you will understand immediately what I am batting on about…you really do feel like you are part of the audience.”

Focal Sopra no.3 $19,995 Review
April 22, 2017 Comments Off on Focal Sopra no.3 $19,995 Review
” Focal has been refining their beryllium tweeter for many years now, and with each iteration, it gets better; smoother and more extended without fatigue. Ten years ago, the beryllium tweeter was a bit much, but they’ve tamed it entirely. It now offers a stunning degree of resolution without any bite. Cymbals, strings, and percussion sound stunningly real, and the integration with the midrange and woofers is equally flawless. The level of coherence the Sopra no.3 offers is world class.”

GoldenEar Technology Triton Reference Loudspeaker $8,498 Review

“Yes. Imaging with the $85,000/pair speakers was stunningly precise, and their sound had an effortless, rock-solid quality that caused the towers to completely disappear from the room. But many of the qualities I heard with that system—transparency, nimble dynamic contrasts, top-to-bottom cohesiveness—were in evidence when I returned home and listened with the Reference. Was I still happy? Absolutely!”

Monitor Audio Platinum II PL300 II Loudspeakers $14,495 Review
April 18, 2017 Comments Off on Monitor Audio Platinum II PL300 II Loudspeakers $14,495 Review
” Still, it was all too easy to forget that the Monitor PL300 II costs only $14,495/pair — it performed at levels achieved by speakers costing far more. The PL300 II’s subtly “polite” sound actually enhanced their reproduction of Chantal Kreviazuk’s In This Life, erasing any hint of aggression in her voice at loud volumes — I preferred listening to this album more through the Monitors than through the Rockports. There was also an appreciable difference in how the two speakers reproduced bass notes. The Monitors consistently provided more slam, kick, and energy in the lower octaves, particularly at lower volumes. T”

KEF Reference 3 Loudspeakers $13,999 Review

” In terms of neutrality and detail from the midrange up, the Reference 3 and Blade Two for the most part ran neck and neck, and the two pairs of speakers projected soundstages of comparable width and depth. Where the Blade Twos stepped ahead of the Reference 3s was in imaging — the Twos can position images anywhere on the stage with uncanny precision. By a lesser margin, the Blade Twos also sounded a bit more open in my room than did the Ref 3s — as did the Oval B1 Decades (see below). They projected their sounds more freely into the room, leaving no telltale cues of sounds emanating from their enclosures.”

Paradigm Persona 3F Floorstanding Speaker Review
April 15, 2017 Comments Off on Paradigm Persona 3F Floorstanding Speaker Review
“It’s worth pointing out that, if you’re part of the “Objective Criteria Mean Nothing, I Only Care About How Speakers Make Me Feel” crowd and you tend to prefer quirky speakers with their own unique voice, the Persona line probably isn’t for you. There’s nothing wrong with that, mind you, but these speakers come as close to disappearing from the equation as any I’ve heard at anything near this price point.”

Micromega MySpeaker with MyAmp $999 Review
April 14, 2017 Comments Off on Micromega MySpeaker with MyAmp $999 Review
” One thing I’ve got to say for the MySpeaker: It’s got guts. While it has limits, it doesn’t shrink from orchestral crescendos. It dug into the crunch-groove of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” with plenty of gusto. During the Manhattan Jazz Quintet’s rendition of “Autumn Leaves,” brass transients were swift, and solo piano was reproduced with good note-to-note articulation, although some of the finer elements of ambient information and harmonic air seemed a little squeezed. As one would expect with a loudspeaker of this spec, there was some dynamic compression. But with a few exceptions MySpeaker adeptly handled just about every example of sonic firworks ”
