2016 EDITORS’ CHOICE AWARDS: LOUDSPEAKERS $500-$1000

” At just under $600, it is hard to imagine a better speaker for the money than this mini-Maggie, provided you have the space for it and a powerful-enough amplifier. Like all Maggie dipoles, the thing sounds open, airy, and unusually lifelike. Improved in overall coherence in its “revised” version, it is still not the last word in resolution, low bass, or top treble, but who cares?”

SVS Prime Tower $1,000 Review
April 18, 2016 Comments Off on SVS Prime Tower $1,000 Review
“The sum total of the Prime’s package is one that feeds well into its mantra of appealing to both sides of the audio coin. I’d like to think that a two-channel application is a bit more revealing than that of home theater, but in the case of these speakers more transparency at a lower price point is a win for both applications. If you want to hear every note, foot tap and breath at $1000, then this is a speaker for you.”

Crystal Cable Arabesque Minissimo Diamond Loudspeakers $25,000 Review
April 17, 2016 Comments Off on Crystal Cable Arabesque Minissimo Diamond Loudspeakers $25,000 Review
” The harmonic and dynamic accuracy that serves piano so brilliantly was just as apparent with strings, which can be intoxicating. On everything from demanding showstoppers like Paganini’s La Risata del Diavolo (Salvatore Accardo, Diabolus In Musica [Deutsche Grammophon 477 6492]) to immersive string quartet music (The Suske Quartet, Beethoven String Quartet Op.130 [Eterna 8 27 454]), the diamond tweeter’s extension brought air and texture, without ever sounding stressed or fatiguing. Although it can be ruthless in revealing detail, it never sounded harsh unless the playing or the recording called for it. The additional resolution revealed more harmonic information, saturating and filling out the image with tonal structure, resulting in an effortlessly realistic sound.”

Elac Debut B6 loudspeaker Review
April 14, 2016 Comments Off on Elac Debut B6 loudspeaker Review
” I listened to the Elac Debut B6es for days and weeks. I listened to my favorite instruments: pianos, pipe organs, and le piano à bretelles. The bass quality was surprising. The tonal character seemed right on. I listened to a lot of blues and zydeco. The B6es could boogie and strut. I played records I hadn’t played in years, and really dug them all.”

SONUS FABER OLYMPICA I REVIEW
April 12, 2016 Comments Off on SONUS FABER OLYMPICA I REVIEW
” To start it off, after living with the Olympica 1 for a couple of weeks, I begin to miss the bass response of my previous loudspeakers, the Focal Electra 1027be. The simplicity of being a two-way bookshelf, like the Olympica 1 eliminates the issues of a complicated crossover and allow it to have all the great sound technicalities. Nevertheless, there is always a trade off, and in this case, it would be the low frequency response that would have been there if the cabinet was larger with a couple of dedicated bass drivers. Following that, would be the overall sound character or signature that might be a make it or break it for fellow potential Olympica 1 owners. The speaker carries a leaner sonic signature to allow it to be more versatile with all kinds of music but some may yearn for a warmer presentation.”

Manger p1 Review
April 10, 2016 Comments Off on Manger p1 Review
“Manger’s ingenious drive unit replicates the basilar membrane in the human ear and produces acoustic signals that are temporally and tonally correct at the same time. Avoiding the piston-shaped movement of a conventional driver, Manger created a bending-wave transducer with a flat, circular membrane of angular flexible foil, excited by a voice coil to make back and forth movements. Yet, and here’s the clever part, its waves radiate concentrically from the centre to the edge; the voice coil only having to excite the membrane’s centre for the sounds to be radiated by the bending waves around the coil.”
