Paradigm Prestige 95F Floorstanding Speaker Review

” Each tessitura is in a solid relationship with each other — nothing juts out, nothing jars. I threw on Track 1, ‘the’ Track 1 that should be in all audiophiles’ arsenal — Thomas Newman’s soundtrack to American Beauty. You all know of my fascination and admiration for this chart and its composer. Unique, catchy and made up of untuned and tuned percussion and synths. I use it to test driver speed. Do you hear all of the resonance inside the Latin Percussion (noun, not adjective), the true timbre of marimbas numerous and the super low, tight synthesized bass? This CD should be on all your ‘to purchase’ lists. If your system is dialed in, you’ll hear subterranean bass utterly removed from the mid range and treble (Newman wants it this way) and a myriad of struck and bowed percussion, each in its own time and space. Don’t forget to listen carefully to the synth gliss shortly after the opening. How many layers can you hear? The Paradigm held its own and replicated the colours and dynamics well, if not in primary colours. There was a little builder beige, if I’m being completely honest”

KEF R900 3-Way Tower Review
March 19, 2016 Comments Off on KEF R900 3-Way Tower Review
” The KEF R900 related this high-res DSD jazz recording with the essential warmth and detail I am used to hearing from my high-end speakers. A nice, spacious soundstage with plenty of space between the instruments. The top-end was never hard or edgy; the aluminum-based mid-frequency driver delivered a quick, tonally correct midrange — without exaggeration or hollowness.
The basss driver were equally impressive, with the metal drivers delivering good thump, but with quick precision. Since the organ‘s mid-bass chords are emphasized in this recording, I wanted to see if the port plugs made a difference in the midbass.”

Monitor Audio Bronze 6 Loudspeakers $1099 Review
March 12, 2016 Comments Off on Monitor Audio Bronze 6 Loudspeakers $1099 Review
” Though mostly neutral, the Monitor’s frequency response hinted at some clever contouring, with a slight mid-to-upper midrange emphasis that produced an exciting, involving sound. This speaker was decidedly not reticent or mellow, but the balance Monitor has struck in the Bronze 6 was spot on. So, too, was the performance of that C-CAM tweeter.”

FOCAL SOPRA NO. 1 STANDMOUNT LOUDSPEAKER £6,599 per pair REVIEW
March 9, 2016 Comments Off on FOCAL SOPRA NO. 1 STANDMOUNT LOUDSPEAKER £6,599 per pair REVIEW
“But dissecting the performance of the Sopra No. 1 is actually doing it a disservice, and doesn’t even hint at its greatest asset: a tremendous sense of coherence where nothing stands out, or for that matter gets in the way. This is where on a musical level it proved to be quite addictive to listen to, whether pulling you in with a great sense of timing, or engaging one’s emotions with the sheer intimacy of a voice or an instrument. Being relatively small, after careful positioning the music was projected into a well-defined and spacious image, with the speakers all but disappearing with the right recording, and conjuring impressive dynamics from thin air. Under these circumstances, it was easy to find myself playing whole albums rather than individual tracks, and rather than sticking within familiar territory, venturing into music that I might have dismissed previously, which I think is always a healthy indication that the system is getting out of the way.”

Vivid Audio Oval B1 Decade Loudspeakers Review
March 9, 2016 Comments Off on Vivid Audio Oval B1 Decade Loudspeakers Review
” The B1Ds didn’t tame 21’s inherent brightness, but the shrieking shrillness wasn’t there — the sound was far more palatable. Listening to other recordings that have the same kind of top-frequency emphasis, I heard their top-frequency emphasis — the B1D didn’t roll off the topmost frequencies of the audioband in any way — but what I didn’t hear was the brittleness or edge produced by speakers whose HF output isn’t as well behaved. At first I was tempted to write that the B1D has one of the cleanest-sounding tweeters I’ve ever heard, but a tweeter’s sound is greatly affected by the cabinet surrounding it — diffraction can muck up even the best tweeter’s output. Instead, I’ll say that the B1D’s top end was the cleanest I’ve heard — ever.”
