Fyne Audio F1-8S Loudspeaker $18,000 Review
November 27, 2024 Comments Off on Fyne Audio F1-8S Loudspeaker $18,000 Review
So, for a loudspeaker that does so many things well, are there any downsides to the F1-8S? Well, the Fyne is not a laid-back loudspeaker. Don’t get me wrong, the F1-8S is not forward or obstreperous in demeanor, but it made every musical performance an event, one that left me no option but to engage with the musical message. For those seeking a loudspeaker that blends into the background, the Fyne may be interpreted as being a little overly energetic. But, the F1-8S has a trick up its sleeve, namely those crossover Energy and Presence controls. With careful adjustment of one or both controls, the user can dial in the condign amount of soundstage perspective and/or treble vivacity. It’s this variability that affords the Fyne a level of flexibility not available with other loudspeakers.
Heroically constructed, with an exceptional fit-and-finish, the Fyne Audio F1-8S is a handcrafted masterpiece. More than that, the F1-8S is a sonic tour-de-force. With superior resolving powers, holographic imaging, and tonality that is spot-on neutral, the F1-8S disappears into the soundstage and brings music to life in a spellbinding manner, one that, once heard, is impossible to forget. The Fyne F1-8S is a music maker of the highest caliber, and in all my years as a reviewer, it’s the most accomplished loudspeaker I’ve experienced.

MACO MACARIA Open Baffle Loudspeaker Review
November 16, 2024 Comments Off on MACO MACARIA Open Baffle Loudspeaker Review
The Mahi put out 20 watts each in triode mode and 40 watts in ultralinear. I appreciated the additional power of ultralinear, but the tonal quality of triode mode was the winning ticket for me. The ultralinear mode accentuated the sharp edges of notes that became tiresome while the triode mode softened them up slightly and gave the music a healthy share of liquidity that benefited the MACARIA. Using a quartet of EL84 tubes in each Mahi with the MACARIA provided a good portion of the benefits of the SET tubes used earlier while providing a tighter bass and continuity of tone from top to bottom. I considered bi-amp’ing with Eddie Wong’s 300B monoblocks on top but I had to draw the line to finish the review.

TAGA Harmony’s Nostalgic TH12 is an interesting-looking loudspeaker with real sonic ability and charm, especially on well-recorded programme material. Whether you like the styling is a personal matter, but there’s no denying that a pair of these will quickly become the focal point of your listening room. Overall, it’s a solid thumbs up for this design, which offers very good value for money—especially when you factor in the bundled stands. Do try to audition a pair if you get the chance.

VPE Electrodynamics Crystal Dipole Speaker & Model 1 DSP Dipole Subwoofer $4,000 Review
November 12, 2024 Comments Off on VPE Electrodynamics Crystal Dipole Speaker & Model 1 DSP Dipole Subwoofer $4,000 Review
This article is about an affordable full-range speaker that performs. It is also about a companion a dipole subwoofer for enhancing the full-range speaker’s performance. The subwoofer also is fitting for use with particular smaller to medium priced and sized Magnepan dipole speakers. The full-range VPE Electrodynamics Crystal Dipole cost $3K/pr and a pair of the Model 1 Powered Dipole Subwoofers cost $1K each. The speaker systems total is $5K, which is reachable for many. As someone who spent about a decade trying to get SOTA sound for a pittance, I find the Crystal Dipole and Model 1 Subwoofer to be products very worth of the budget audiophile’s time. Is it worth the time for audiophiles higher up the equipment food chain? Let’s find out!

Sonetto V G2 £5500 Review

Schifrin was asked to re-record this theme for the movie’s soundtrack release [Warner Bros. 9362480852], and he obliged with a poppier, less moody take. A back-to-back listen through the new Sonetto V showed the difference, not just in instrument choice and melody, but in terms of dynamics (more forthright) and stereo mix (disjointed).
This, then, is another strength of Sonus faber’s Sonetto V G2: a revealing nature not just in terms of top-end detail, but of other musical building blocks. Playing Jason Isbell’s ‘Cover Me Up’ [Southeastern; Southeastern Records], it threw a spotlight on the careworn vocal and unearthed a wide dynamic, making apparent the emphasis Isbell puts on certain chords and lyrics. Behind him, a slide guitar sounded syrupy and reverberant with just the right amount of distortion. This was fine stuff, and worthy of the price tag.

The 705 S3 Signature has the sort of all-round performance charm you expect from a B&W speaker, its sound being rich, energetic and suited to any genre. At the same time, the skill with which it crafts detailed, authentic images, and its ability to pick out the tiniest of musical details, makes its premium price seem entirely worthwhile. Design and build are superb too – you just need to pick a colour. Me? Midnight Blue.

Many high-end audio speakers can stray from the essence of the music. Despite technical sophistication, exotic components, and marketing claims, they often sound like a collection of drivers that shuffle notes in a kaleidoscopic way, producing unpleasant listening fatigue.
In contrast, the Silent Pound Challenger II speakers offer a harmonious and sympathetic union of well-researched technologies, drivers, crossovers, and enclosure design
