Most importantly, using the HumminGuru with any of the fluid variations resulted in pretty flawless-looking records. As far as the sound, the HumminGuru eliminated static and surface noise issues to the point I no longer heard them. While it may seem obvious how much of a difference this would make to the listening experience, I have to say it was even better than that. Specifically, I have noticed static and surface noise to varying degrees on almost every record I recall playing and, over time, I just accepted that was part of the analog experience. And I convinced myself this was true because I buy a good number of new records and the used records I buy are in good shape; I clean every record I buy before playing it the first time, and yet the static and noise would always be audible. In other words, the HumminGuru gave me a better result than I thought possible.

In 1991 I went from an eighth grader listening to misogynistic Motley Crue to a high school freshman awakened by Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten and the band’s activism. Pearl Jam changed my life, and I can’t imagine it going any other way. I would happily take PJ’s music on a mono AM radio, like the one on which my dad listened to WCCO 830 in the bathroom every morning, rather than any other band’s music on the world’s highest resolution stereo. It’s about the music, the message, and the emotion. Sure, we hear music with our ears, but some music we feel in our hearts.

Some additional company background now. Analog Audio Design was founded by Christophe Martinez in France in 2020. An engineer with extensive experience in electronics and firmware who worked on flight simulator design for 25 years, Martinez also had previous association with the Mulann Group, the French industrial conglomerate that “currently holds all the knowledge and the processes for high-quality magnetic tape that originated in Europe,” and owns the (all one word) RecordingTheMasters brand.

The cartridge and the Power Supply are such delicate equipment that in order to prolong their operational lifespans, AN-UK instructs the user to switch off the unit if not used for more than a few days. Throughout the owner’s manual, this instruction is mentioned several times, one of them especially noteworthy for its all-upper-case font and concluding exclamation mark.
