” At its price of $899, the DP-X1 has few competitors in terms of features and sound. There are several excellent-performing, less-expensive players such as the $699 Sony NW-ZX100HN or the $499 Astell & Kern AK Jr. Both offer even better battery life than the DP-X1, but they have fewer features and drive capabilities, and neither supports streaming services. Priced above the DP-X1, the $1,199 Sony NW-ZX2 has the ability to stream and act as a USB DAC, but it doesn’t support MQA files or balanced headphone connections. The $999 Calyx M and Questyle QP-1R are both excellent-sounding players with DAC features, but neither supports streaming music sources or MQA.”

Sony NW-ZX100HN Portable Player and In-Ear Headphones Reviewed

” While the NW-ZX100HN’s sales materials don’t promise that it can drive every headphone available, it did a good job with a majority of headphones I tried. Even with the Beyerdynamic DT-990 600-ohm version, the NW-ZX100HN had enough gain to play loud enough for my needs, although it was near maximum volume. With hyper-efficient in-ears like the Weston W-60, the player had ample power, and I found that I rarely got above 11 on the 1-to-100 volume scale.”

” This provided us with some MQA samples, along with the same tracks in 24-bit/352kHz FLAC for a bit of A-B testing. To give you an idea of the difference in file size, a 410MB 24/352 FLAC file is reduced to 50MB in MQA, so making it quicker to download or easier to stream.”

COWON PLENUE D DAP – REVIEW

” rue, it doesn’t have the literal quality of the DX90, which can be purchased for the same price, but it does fit into the realm of portability that I consider suited for actual on the go listening. I can’t take my DX90 with me on trips, I know the battery will deplete in mere hours. I can’t take the L3 from Luxury and Precision with me on trips either, nor the Studio V. We’ve forgotten what portability actually is because, over the last 5 or 6 years, audiophile companies have been swinging towards 3:1 ratio of sound quality vs functionality.”

” At this point I must admit that I love to experiment. One reason I chose the 100R was for the Android OS. (Google Play Store) Before purchasing the 100R I was listening to music on a Note 3 phone. I found that apps such as Neutron, JetAudio Plus, and Hiby Music could make a phone sound acceptable. For you other “Mad Scientists “out there I highly recommend an alternative player. Neutron and JetAudio Plus are my go to players. To my ears they make a world of difference, and they both function perfectly with the 100R. Not so with the X7. Here’s the Thing, no matter to what extent I EXPERIMENT the 100R retains its overall character. A very transparent, detailed audio player. It’s a beautiful thing.”

LUXURY & PRECISION L3 DAP $399 Review

” Despite my unbridled rage over the nonsense UI functionality, this player sounds fantastic. It is the first under $500 DAP that I’ve used that compares to the iBasso DX90 using Rockbox…and Rockbox sounds better than the stock Mango, un-modded OS of the DX90 and in my opinion even the Fiio X5. But, I’ve failed blind testing between them when comparisons were drawn between the Rockboxed DX90 and the L3. So, there is a hierarchy going on here and the L3 is undeniably my pick for the best overall clarity in a mid-fi DAP that isn’t modded. Both players are near identical in setup and feel, overall texture, clarity and dynamics across the board. It isn’t until I play DSD files that I know I am using the L3. With those higher res files, a noticeably higher purity level factor becomes evident and it bests the DX90 Rockbox modded sound by a step or two. Not much, but enough to hear it and to be able to call it superior when A/Bing a DSD file with it’s .Flac version.”

” he sound through headphones is good, but not amazing. You get a good tonal balance and plenty of detail whether you listen to Spotify or CD-quality WAVs, and there’s a lovely delicacy to hi-res tracks.”
