“Once you have decided how you will insert it into your current system, the next decision is one of control. The most traditional method would be a UPnP control software for whatever platform you plan to use. I tried Linn Kazoo on my Mac which is free and available for any OS, it worked just fine. That being said as you already know I am a big fan of Roon and with this being both Roon Ready and with an option to be a setup Roon Endpoint, I have taken advantage of this. This means the Nimitra has become my Roon Core and I can control my Core from my iMac, my OnePlus Two phone and output music stored on the core via my phone, DACs connected to my iMac and of course, DACs connected to the Nimitra. I could have left my iMac as my Roon Core and with the Nimitra being Roon Ready streamed through it to my DAC using storage within my iMac. This is an area where Fidelizers first-rate customer support comes in as they will actually go onto customers Nimitras remotely to make sure that any drivers are installed etc for what DAC you use or to reconfigure if you decide down the line you would like use this with Roon.”

“My preamp is the new PS Audio Gain Cell DAC (reviewed HERE), which combines a truly superb balanced, analog preamp with an ambitiously good and tailorable DAC; it also offers every digital input imaginable, and is remarkably transparent for an under $2K combo unit. For digital sources, I have an Oppo disc-spinner that I use as a CD transport and for SACDs; I also employ a custom-built Acer laptop with a complement of multiple Solid State Drives as my music server. It’s connected to the Sonore UltraRendu (reviewed HERE) for streaming digital files to the PS Audio DAC; in between is a JCAT USB Isolator for galvanic noise suppression. “Unboxing either subwoofer is a two-person job: The 12” weighs just under 100 pounds (98.5, to be exact), and the 15” weighs 128.5 pounds. Then there’s the added weight of the double-boxed shipping container. There are no instructions for unpacking the beast, but it’s best to open the top of the outer box, slowly flip the whole thing over, and lift the outer box off the inner one. Repeat the process to remove the sub from the inner enclosure; your back will thank you. Each sub has spiked rubber feet, so it’s best to use some sliding furniture movers (available at your local hardware store) to position it. Monoprice includes a pair of white gloves in case you want to provide your own white-glove service and keep oily fingerprints off the satinfinish, black ash vinyl.”

“Before I talk about sound, I want to lay bare my preferences. I was at a meet a last year, and a guy there had a moded HD800 there with a few high powered tube amps (I don’t remember the names of the amps, sorry). They added a lot of warmth to the HD800, but I missed the deeper, tighter bass you can get with SS amps, and all the warmth seemed to be fighting with the natural signature of the HD800, and not working with it. Listening to it on my SS setup wasn’t any better. It was cold and ruthless. The guy called me back over and told me he wanted me to hear something. He broke out a hybrid amp (again, I don’t remember the name) and had me give it a listen. It was perfect. It was very linear, with very tight and deep bass, while adding just a touch of smoothness to the sound. To me, instead of trying to make the headphone something it wasn’t, it complimented the HD800, adding to the strengths of the headphone while smoothing out the rough edges. It made no effort to change the sound. Now, I am not saying this to dump on OTL tube amps, and I know, with different tubes, you can alter their sound quite a bit, but I want to be clear on what kind of sound I favor.”

“You can turn the low pass filter on or off depending on whether you’re using the sub with a Low Frequency Effect (LFE) channel. If the low pass filter is on then you can set the frequency at which the sub crosses over with the main speakers and you can adjust the slope at which the low pass filter rolls off (the default is 12dB). There’s also a Phase control, which allows you to shift the timing of the subwoofer output to align with the main speakers or additional subwoofers, and a Polarity control that allows you to reverse the electrical polarity from positive (default) to negative if necessary. The Room Gain Compensation control allows you to adjust for excessive sound wave density in smaller rooms by reducing the bass at either -6 or -12 dB per an octave, below a frequency that is adjustable from 25 to 40 Hz. You do this by turning the room gain compensation on or off and adjusting the high pass frequency and the adjustment slope (12dB is the default setting).”
