“The first one I would lay down is musicality. You can instantly hear the music being enriched with the lively attributes via Jean Lenco. Compared with many of the new wavers the difference is not subtle and even untrained ear can spot it. Musical flow resolves in a much more unaltered rendition of original material moving closer to the mighty power of the analog tape machines. Iron, solid steel, aluminum etc. being used on many of the present turntables are adding the unmistakable ring effect and dullness to the sound. These are the design choices, that led to precognition. With vinyl reproduction everything and anything matters. Vinyl rig chain represent the most fragile system chain and its prone to every miniature changes. It’s fully perplexed science in action.

“Now for the most important part, the sound. The Yggdrasil’s tonality is quite outstanding. It takes the basic characteristics of the Gungnir Multibit (Gumby) and adds a finer layer of resolution, richer visceral bass and extends the treble. Contrary to many other DACs in this category which sound overly-analytical and shrill in nature, the Yggdrasil tastefully infuses detail with a natural organic-like quality that is evocative of vinyl. However, unlike a vinyl set-up, the Yggdrasil offers greater levels of detail and resolution that masterfully portray subtle auditory cues and nuances to give a complete and more involving experience. Next to the Yggdrasil, the Gungnir Multibit illuminates a lesser fraction of these micro-details at the expense of a warmer and more liquidesque tone. ”

“The SubSeries 450 is impressively powerful for its size, but it can’t deliver the ultra-deep, floor-shaking bass that many larger subs can. During the U-571 scenes I played, there’s a part where the submarine passes under a destroyer. The sub’s engine sounds in this scene are extremely low-pitched and tend to make subwoofers distort and/or make their ports chuff or their passive radiators rattle. The SubSeries 450 exhibited no such distress, but neither did it shake the floor. I could hear the vibrations from the sub’s engine, but I couldn’t really feel them.”

“THe M5 outperforms the M3’s treble presentation in so many ways. Whilst not being the last word in natural decay, the M5 lower treble is far less sibilant and peaky with a much smoother and less uneven treble presentation. I always though the M3 could get a touch too peaky, but the M5 seems to have a more refined approach with excellent detail and articulation. It is not as smooth sounding or warm as the Alien, it does have a sharper edge to its attack but it easily outperforms the even sharper sounding Cayin N5 and the flatter sounding Opus#1 and definitely more spacious sounding than the old M3.”

“The limiting factor to the ACE is fairly obvious. Strip away all the features and it’s a 50W amplifier. It’s a really good 50W amplifier, capable of punching above its weight, and hangs on to its sonic character for a lot longer than most 50W integrated amplifiers, but that still imposes certain limits on what speakers you can use with the ACE. I don’t suppose anyone in their right mind would use the ACE with a punishing £100,000 behemoth loudspeaker with the impedance load of a small asteroid, but this highlights the ACE’s performance in positive terms. You wouldn’t partner these two because of the price differential, but in performance terms, the ACE is a more tempting proposition, thanks to its outstanding sound quality. If you are going for some really high-grade loudspeakers, it might be best looking at a separates approach – very possibly from the same brand.”
