“I’ve been listening to quite a bit of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks lately and this hasn’t subsided with the arrival of the nova150. Although not my favorite song on the album, the vibraphone and guitar juxtaposition on The Way You Lovers Do is a treat for the ears. The nova150 does a great job of reproducing each instrument in its own space, naturally, followed by an aural mess of musical notes and screaming vocals to finish the track. The title track, Astral Weeks, is my favorite”

” The sound signature of the Edition S logically changes when you turn it in to an open headphone but in both cases the Edition S has a more musical and fun tuning than it has a “reference” one as many call it. Bass and mids have bigger body than in a neutral tuned headphone and the treble is soft and easy to listen to yet at the same time you get a good level of detail and clarity while the sound
stage is more than just ok. I would say the character of the Edition S tilts more to the warmer side but this isn’t an overly warm or colored headphone.”

“If I screw on my reviewer’s cap real tight, squeezing out mostly all of the fun involved in listening to music, I’d say that the d1-integral does not have as fine a grip on bass as its more expensive siblings or even the recently reviewed Moon by Simaudio Nēo 280D MiND. While I remain very impressed with the Nēo 280D, it does not reach as deeply into music’s richness and nuance as the totalac. On a personal note, my heart and mind still have me craving either the d1-tube-mk2 or the d1-dual DAC, a craving which can only be filled if/when my bank account becomes fuller.”

“Compared to the very impressive MOON by Simaudio Nēo 280D MiND (see review, the NADAC offered up a more refined sound image, where every last piece of the sonic puzzle simply gelled in a more convincing manner. There were times when I let Roon Radio take over track selection so I was delighted with the surprise of musical choices and their accompanying sounds. I learned a number of things from this experience including how good Marissa Nadler’s music sounds, how well the NADAC deals with acoustic music, and how the NADAC can handle the hard stuff without getting the least bit tipsy.

“On the upper mids: this is a very important area for me. When an IEM gives sibilance it immediately becomes a disappointment to me. ” I didn’t mention it before but this is a ported speaker; the port points down at the base so you don’t see it and it’s so well tuned that you don’t hear it either. As a long time transmission line user, I have grown sensitized to port character, but couldn’t detect any extra bloom to the bass with the 803 D3. What was easy to hear is supremely articulate, precise, and yet musically fluent sound quality with a range of sources and amplifiers, but this level of transparency means that the less able partnering equipment is very easy to identify”

“Bass on the MR2 isn’t undercooked but it does sound a little soft and lacking in definition at times with some minor bleed into the mids. Sub-bass is somewhat rolled off below 50Hz so extension on both ends is not spectacular. The majority of the bass action is higher up from 100HZ onwards. It’s not a lean bass presentation by any stretch of the imagination and it has good enough impact to sound at home with dynamic bass performances from the likes of Justice and their bombastic talk box driven “Civilization”. I would love for Pai just to drop the elevation by 2-3dB on the mid and upper bass and increase sub-bass by 1-2dB though that may not be possible with their dual BA design.
