“A fully featured and, above all, easy to use analog-based recording system. One principle feature of all lower cost vinyl ‘ripping’ systems, often ignored, is that the better the quality of the original source the better the final ripped file. Hence, Pro-Ject was not only brave, but sensible in choosing the higher quality Debut as an analog source for this system. The company could have easily have defaulted to a cheap and cheerful system that would have worked fine, yet it would not have been able to properly handle the highest resolutions at 24-bit/192kHz or DSD. Pro-Ject should be applauded for their design choices! Yes, this package may be a slightly niche choice, but I welcome the very fact that this choice exists.”

The noises are still there, but they’ve receded into the background.”

“This is surprising, perhaps, because pitch is of course completely fundamental to music, and getting it right is clearly important. But old tape machines were not very predictable in speed, and today it can be hard to know what the speed ought to be unless one has a definite idea of what the original pitch of the music was. (It was quite startling to listen to a reissue from a few years ago where a certain violin concerto in A minor was actually in B flat minor as put on the record.) Of course CDs made from old mastertapes can have this sort of problem, too. But with the Technics you can tune up (or, more usually, down) your music—and you need to do so surprisingly often.”

” 10K US is expensive. But the performance characteristics you will attain will place you solidly in the top tier of the highend. If this is not enough for you, the Avenger offers various levels of upgrades that could total an additional 10K US. This could be done in stages or all at once. I’m hopeful that in the future I will have the opportunity to try these upgrades and report back to you. After all, the base model sounds so damn good it is not leaving this house. Thus the Avenger has now taken its place in the Audiophilia cosmos.”
