“They weren’t. Using my Arcam irDAC with both, I found that the Hegel was ruler-flat in its treble response, with an airy, extended sound with which I could easily explore the upper-frequency boundaries of every recording. The Octave, on the other hand, sounded a touch recessed, tending to focus more on the musical performance itself, and less on the recording venue. Two types of sound that will appeal to two types of listener, I suspect, and that will vary depending on the recording.”
