This comparison is a little more difficult. First, the HD800S is much, much more position and seal-dependent than the ATH-ADX5000, the HD6XX, or the Clear. Second, the HD800S I purchased don’t measure as well as the pair I reviewed earlier. Third, the right spot to anchor the graphs for comparison isn’t as obvious with the HD800S as for HD6XX or the Clear. Those issues aside, the ATH-ADX5000’s “W”-shape still predominates. However, the magnitude of the differences around 500 Hz and 2 kHz differ from both previous comparisons. Most notably, the HD800S’s downward slope from the lower-to-upper midrange minimizes the 2 kHz divergence seen with the other cans. While it’s not a large difference, the ATH-ADX5000’s low bass doesn’t roll off quite as fast as the HD800S’s — a characteristic of the latter that’s often bemoaned. In the treble region, the two cans seem to have a lot in common, except that the ATH-ADX5000 doesn’t fall above 12 kHz the way the HD800S does.

Dynaudio Emit 30 floorstanding loudspeaker Review
April 18, 2022 Comments Off on Dynaudio Emit 30 floorstanding loudspeaker Review
There’s a phrase used in audio; the ‘mug’s eyeful’. It summons up images of products that look like a bargain, but any notions of quality quickly stop at the word ‘look’. The Dynaudio Emit 30 is the absolute opposite of a mug’s eyeful; it offers superb value coupled with outstanding performance. They are every millimetre a Dynaudio loudspeaker, with the family sound and a deep, pounding bass that matches perfectly with the rooms in which such a loudspeaker will live. It’s a sophisticated design that cuts few corners to achieve that low price. Not only is it a good speaker, the Dynaudio Emit 30 throws down a gauntlet to other brands; if Dynaudio can do something like the Emit 30, why the **** can’t you?

LSA VT-70 TUBE INTEGRATED STEREO AMPLIFIER/HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER REVIEW
April 17, 2022 Comments Off on LSA VT-70 TUBE INTEGRATED STEREO AMPLIFIER/HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER REVIEW
To perform my listening tests of the LSA VT-70 Tube Integrated Stereo Amplifier/Headphone Amplifier I used my Audio-gd R2R-1 DAC as source, powered by a Core Power Technologies A/V Equi=Core 1000, and for cabling Cardas Iridium single-ended RCA interconnects, Cardas Iridium power cords, and a Cardas Clear USB cable. LSA recommends letting the amplifier warm up for about half an hour before listening for best results. This may seem like a long time, but truth is solid-state amps can take several days to reach full operating temp, for this reason, the amplifier that is now running my AV system has only been powered off during the last 40 years, for moves, system changes, and power outages. One further step I went through before doing any serious listening was to re-bias the tubes. While strictly not necessary as this was done at the factory, tubes can change over time, and environmental factors, as well as the effects of shipping, can cause this to change. As it turned out, the bias was a little high, not critically so, but worth noting. Due to space considerations, I set up the VT-70 on the far side of my desk facing away from me, so the remote control came in real handy.

PureAudioProject Trio15 Coax10 open-baffle speakers $8,250 Review
April 17, 2022 Comments Off on PureAudioProject Trio15 Coax10 open-baffle speakers $8,250 Review
The Trio15 Coax10 does not accomplish the full range, single point source sound signature perfectly. It obviously cannot, as there are two huge 15” woofers flanking the 10” driver. The ear perceives this, especially when bass-infused music is heard. However, this is not a problem, except for those who are willing to eschew lower frequencies in search of a perfect point source sound. You simply cannot have it both ways; the closest you can come is with a speaker like the Tannoy Glenair, which I reviewed back in 2008. But like the Glenair, with the Horn1 you are making a more difficult match of the 1.4” polymer tweeter to the 15” woofer. It works, and to many persons’ ears is a splendid result. But, by necessity, it leaves some room for improvement in the midrange and mid-bass, and that is where the Coax10 shines.
One of my system-building principles is that unless absolutely necessary, I will not be without deep bass, and ideally not without LF, i.e. lower than 20Hz from high-resolution audio files. I see those frequencies as necessary to grasping the extent of the performance. If it is a choice between having the pure point source with only a 10” driver or the PAP design with assistance from the 15” drivers, I will opt for the presence of the 15” drivers, because elimination of the bigger drivers forfeits not only the reproduction of those low frequencies, but also the potential for the tactile sense created by deeper and stronger bass. I do not wish to have a large set of forward firing open-air headphones, but a speaker system!

Estelon X Diamond Mk II $83,000 Loudspeaker Review
April 16, 2022 Comments Off on Estelon X Diamond Mk II $83,000 Loudspeaker Review
I think my assessment of the X Diamond Mk IIs is clear. This is not just one of the great floorstanding, direct-radiating loudspeakers; it is one of the greatest floorstanding, direct-radiating loudspeakers. Its relatively modest size (four-and-a-half-feet tall, a foot-and-a-half wide) and beautiful (and beautifully functional) shape make it ideal for modestly-sized-to-larger rooms (though Estelon’s bigger—and just as beautiful and innovative—transducers may better suit truly large spaces). Obviously, I recommend it. Indeed, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Which is why Alfred Vassilkov’s Estelon X Diamond Mk II is the 2021 winner of The Absolute Sound’s foremost honor, the Overall Product of the Year Award.

Chord Anni Desktop Amplifier Review
April 15, 2022 Comments Off on Chord Anni Desktop Amplifier Review

Is it a mini-amp with a fine headphone output, or a ‘head-fi’ design also capable of driving small speakers convincingly? However you look at it, Chord’s Anni is a great choice for desktop audio with a sound tailored to flatter partnering equipment. It’ll drive bigger, sensitive speakers at a push, but that’s not its role – the Anni ‘is what it is’, to quote an overused cliché, and looks and sounds well-judged for its tasks.
