SME Model 60 $50,519 Review

The distinctive bassline that opens The Way You Make Me Feel charges along with gusto – it’s powerful and articulate and brims with textural information. The 60 is sure-footed rather than enthusiastic when it comes to rendering rhythms, but in our system at least, it never comes across as mechanical or sterile. Given an appropriate recording, the SME 60 can still be immensely thrilling, but it has a ruthless nature that quickly shows shortcomings in the production or performance if they’re there.

Over our time with this record player we listen to a large range of music, from Bob Marley And The Wailers’ Catch a Fire to Orff’s Carmina Burana, and never do we lift the Ortofon off the record at the end of a side without admiration of the job SME has done. Sometimes we wish there was a touch more in the way of natural sparkle; an ability to reproduce Marley’s Stir It Up with less of a poker face. Then again, we struggle to think of an alternative that does this while matching the Model 60 across its formidable array of strengths.

Consonance Wax Engine and Charisma Eco

Consonance Wax Engine and Charisma Eco

Sound quality is as you’d expect from recordings of that era, and perhaps a little telephone-line-like. Having said that, there is good weight to the bottom end which the Eco was adept at retrieving. The midrange came across well, where most of the information is, and gave a wholly faithful rendition. The upper reaches; FFJ’s voice is poor at best, shrill (especially as the notes climb skywards) at worst, and because of the appalling vibrato and screechiness, very difficult to track cleanly.

All I can do is commend you to the Eco as one of the few cartridges I have had which has negotiated this disc without upset or mistracking. As much as it can be, FFJ’s voice was focussed, clearly presented, and definitely ‘there’ with bells on. I’m not sure whose poodles she had used as singing teachers, but they did a fantastic job, her ‘yelping’ being faithfully reproduced by my audio system. If you don’t believe me, please, I implore you, check out a recording of FFJ for yourself.

Schiit Audio Folkvangr Headphone Amplifier$1799 Only 250

July 17, 2022 Comments Off on Schiit Audio Folkvangr Headphone Amplifier$1799 Only 250

Stoddard also explained he didn’t expect Folkvangr to be a big seller in any case, since it’s a very hot-running, impractical amplifier that doesn’t put out an especially large amount of power.

For those who are interested in Schiit’s all-out tube headphone amp, Folkvangr uses a total of 10 tubes–two matched 6N1Ps for input and voltage gain, and eight 6N6Ps for output. Eight separate DC servos keep the output tubes at a low level of offset, and an analog-computer-style protection system monitors and mutes the output in case of any tube mishaps.

At idle, the 10 tubes run 7.2A of heater current and 100mA of standing bias.

In addition to the tubes, Folkvangr offers a switchable impedance multiplier—an electronic circuit that operates similar to a transformer. Stoddard emphasizes this is “not a buffer, it’s output is in parallel with the tube stage, and has the same distortion profile.

Audeze CRBN Electrostatic Headphones $4500 Review

July 16, 2022 Comments Off on Audeze CRBN Electrostatic Headphones $4500 Review

Clearly, the Audeze CRBN is a revolutionary monitor. With EQ I think it can take on any other rival, whether magnetic or electrostatic, in any frequency range. Electrostatic phones require a heavy, dedicated amplifier, so of course I use more portable headphones for outside or bedroom listening. But in the studio and listening room I now use a single headphone for both pleasure and reference listening: The Audeze CRBN, equalized if possible to Bob’s EQ. It is the most transparent, musical and accurate headphone I’ve ever heard. Bob’s EQ is designed to perceptually match the calibrated loudspeakers in the mastering suite, where thousands of masters approved by artists and producers have been made. Thus, you will not only be able to enjoy the music, you can judge recordings like a mastering engineer. No second-guessing the headphone response. I urge you to check out the Audeze CRBN.
