Pear Audio Blue Odar Turntable with Cornet 3 Tonearm REVIEW
October 22, 2022 Comments Off on Pear Audio Blue Odar Turntable with Cornet 3 Tonearm REVIEW
If you want to play records, this is the way to go in my view. (If you are totally focused on correct pitch, you could look for a used Nakamichi disc-centering turntable; otherwise, this is the one.) All the Pear Audio designs of Peter Mezek aim at the same goals of silence, solidity, absence of micro-speed variations, and absence of grit, grain, and resonance effects. In short, they are designed to reproduce what is actually on the record—and, of course, there are some definite things on it. One of the less expensive Pear Blue setups will likely get you close to the ultimate that the Odar/Cornet 3 combination represents. But if you want to go for the best, here it is. Typical analog playback reviews are usually “yes and then again no.” This one is all “yes.” The Blue Odar is different and better at a price that is lower than other super-tables.

Neat Petite Classic $ Review

This is a fiercely competitive areas of the market, with mainstream brands opting to design small speakers in the UK but manufacturing in the Far East to meet key price-points. Neat eschews that idea and it’s refreshing to have a British loudspeaker in more than just name, manufacturing being in County Durham and the cabinet hailing from Essex.
The Petite Classic is something special, and manages to combine competent engineering with superb manufacturing standards while generating a highly entertaining and extremely involving sound. For sheer enjoyment and involvement, the new Petite is able to not only match but surpass the original, helped by advancements in technology and the glorious implementation of that AMT ribbon. Classic by name and classic by nature.

HIFIMAN EF400 DAC/Headphone Amplifier $600 Review
October 21, 2022 Comments Off on HIFIMAN EF400 DAC/Headphone Amplifier $600 Review
As for the question of whether R2R DACs are more musical but less detailed than Sigma-Delta DACs, I was not able to reach a conclusive verdict because, during my audition, the EF400 delivered both micro details and a sense of musicality in the same way as I have heard from amplifier DACs that sported more than twice the price of the EF400.
I have heard amplifier DACs that sound better than the EF400, but then they not only cost twice as much as the EF400 but some of them do not even offer the same bullet proof build quality as the EF400. What that means is the if you are in the market for an amplifier DAC in the sub $1000 range, you would be hard pressed to do better than the EF400.

Tannoy Stirling Prestige Gold Reference loudspeaker Review

The Stirling’s 1″-thick grille, which is inset flush with the cabinet edge, is the heaviest and thickest I’ve ever seen. It’s covered in a tweedlike fabric that reminds me of a blazer worn by a character from a ’60s TV show. The grille snaps into place magnetically and is also held in place by the same mechanism found on earlier Tannoy speakers, released with a gold-plated key near the bottom. “This is a classic Tannoy design,” Deal explained. “Fans like the big grille and key for removal. Tannoy avoids the use of plastic pins in this design. … Owners leave them either on or off.”
Around the back, four large, sturdy binding posts allow for biwiring; a fifth post enables optional earth-grounding to the amplifier chassis, presumably to reduce EMI reception. Four thick, color-coded wire jumpers were included to connect high- and low-frequency posts.

Auralic Aries G1.1 Review

The Aries G1.1 maintains Auralic’s position as a serious competitor in the mid price streaming audio stakes, it isn’t inexpensive but will give the alternatives a very good run for their money. The Lightning DS control app alone raises it above the majority. The option of an SSD onboard is one that I would encourage prospective users to take up, it represents a significant saving on standalone drives of a similar quality and takes up no space either. Auralic have done a fine job with this latest addition to the range and anyone looking for a top notch streamer at a sensible price should give it a try.
