“We have definitely improved the Focus tweeter with a device called the Hexis. It’s a plastic shape that looks like the Death Star and sits right behind the dome of the tweeter, very close to the diaphragm itself. The Hexis helps control the resonant behavior of the diaphragm and extends and helps give character to the high frequencies. It also helps protect the tweeter so if you accidentally push it, it won’t tend to crinkle or squash, thereby limiting high-end performance.

“We’ve also improved the midwoofer’s voice-coil, magnet system, and surround. The midrange/woofer is composed of polypropylene with added MSP (magnesium silicate polymer).” Because of this additive, it “delivers a much more natural sound than you typically get from a polypropylene cone.”

LSA VT-150 Integrated $2,999 REVIEW

March 4, 2023 Comments Off on LSA VT-150 Integrated $2,999 REVIEW

Tracking through a wide variety of different music is a joy with the VT-150. It is dynamic enough to play classical music or heavy rock as loud as you need yet offers great linearity at lower volumes. Even listening to the CSN debut album on MoFi at very low levels with the Dynaudio Confidence 20s is incredibly engaging. Yet cranking the volume way up for some Public Enemy and Slayer proves it delivers the goods.

in addition to having solid, controlled extension on both ends of the frequency scale, this amplifier can generate a large sound field in all three dimensions. There’s a lot of “vacuum tube magic” going on here, to be sure.

And, putting a $2,500-$3,000 amplifier in the context of the $7,500 to $15k system it is more than likely going to end up in will leave you thrilled with the purchase. If you’ve been dreaming of investigating a tube amplifier, I can think of no better place to start your journey. Perhaps at some point, we will commandeer a second one to investigate how these perform as monoblocks. For now, staffer Jerold O’Brien will be using this one on a daily. His daughter took the VT-70, so how can you argue with that?

Wilson Audio Alexia V Loudspeaker £79,998 Review

Recalling a mentor who said, ‘If the soundstage is correct, all else will follow’, as with the Wilsonian concern for coherent and correct time arrival, within the soundstage – thanks to its scale, width, depth and height – I could picture with ease the performers and the instruments, and their relative sizes. Retrieval of detail was of macro-lens precision, as was exact instrument positioning. Confirmed in part by images in the CD’s booklet, it occurred to me that use of the term ‘uncanny’ is actually an understatement.

What turned this into a life-affirming experience, after dozens of favourite test tracks including most of Lou Rawls’ At Last [Blue Note CDP 7 91937 2] and the most authentic reproduction and contrast between his growl and Dianne Reeves’ sparkle, as well as Keb’ Mo’s Peace… Back By Popular Demand [Okeh/Epic EK 92687] with its gorgeous piano passages, was a recording from the Age of Sibilance. I don’t know why so many 1980s recordings are the antithesis of those from the velvety 1950s, but too many nestle on a knife-edge between treble extension and torment.

ARYLIC A50+ WI-FI STEREO AMPLIFIER $199 REVIEW

March 2, 2023 Comments Off on ARYLIC A50+ WI-FI STEREO AMPLIFIER $199 REVIEW

Honestly, with the sheer number of features packed into this little amp, it’s hard to not like it! Wi-Fi, AirPlay, or Bluetooth 5.0 are all ways to wirelessly connect to it, not to mention all the wired options. It would be hard to find a setup that this amp wouldn’t work with. The app is ok, not great but ok. Did I mention it also includes a remote? I would be interested to see a more powerful version of this amp in the future, but all-in-all I think for $199 it’s a solid option for most users!

I didn’t have any issues in my testing of the amp, it does include a one-year warranty which is always nice to see. I think this little amp would hold up for a good number of years and then some. I would like to see some updates to the app, it’s rather basic in design but has a lot of room for improvement.

After I was finished listening to my classical examples, Mark played moments from the 1979 progressive rock classic Pink Floyd CD The Wall, allowing me to hear the electrical instruments of the band in a state-of-the-art recording. The recording was made manifest in the most arresting way. You could not be indifferent to the sound pouring through these babies. There was immediacy and energy, forward energy, born on the wings of the directionality of the sound. Very impressive. As an aside, I must admit, and many of you will laugh at this, I am not that familiar with Pink Floyd. By 1970 I had stopped playing and arranging “covers” of early Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears material, sold off my “ballsy” Hammond-L and 251 Leslie speaker, and started focussing on the classical repertoire. (Yes, I do yearn occasionally to return to this repertoire). But I digress. For the moment, allow me to make a few final comments on the details of the speakers and we will have more to say about their sound.

DALI Kore Floorstanding Speaker Review €80,000 Review

Afterwards, we listened to four instruments played with virtuosity in excellent sound quality: tenor saxophone, piano, double bass and drums of the Johnny Griffin Quartet. As skilfully as easily, the musicians proved that jazz is by no means only music for the brain, but that rhythm and feeling are elementary components of this genre.

You will search long and in vain for more premium funk than Maceo Parker’s performance in Cologne’s Stadtgarten in March 1992. The pure energy of those evenings – found on the the “Life On Planet Groove” album – is delivered completely effortless into the listening room by the DALI, even at breathtaking, live-like levels. The heat, which downright boiled the concert hall on a cold March evening, made us forget that we’re listening to something pre-recorded as long as the record was playing. And we were constantly aware of the fact that even at levels above 100 decibels, we were far from pushing the DALI to its limits. The unbelievable effortlessness and complete transparency down to the lowest bass frequencies, with which the rhythmically intricate and detail-filled “Soul Power ’92” of the nine-member line-up sounded, was simply sensational and not yet experienced in our listening room up to that point.

Where Am I?
