Since my Alexx V arrived, very few upgrades have moved the entire system this far forward. The Dan D’Agostino Momentum Z is one of them. This is not a small refinement to the Momentum formula. To my ears, it is a step function. I am hearing things from the Alexx V at whisper quiet levels and at the other end of the volume knob that I simply had not heard before.

What makes this even more interesting is where D’Agostino goes from here. Out of the gate, the C2Z and Momentum Z combination felt like it was nipping at the heels of the Relentless systems I have heard. Dan and the team have already moved the goalposts again, taking the Z technology into the new Relentless Z Preamplifier, Relentless 800Z, and Relentless Epic 1600Z. That tells me the Momentum Z was not just another product cycle. It was the beginning of a new architecture for the company.

I also cannot stress enough how much I love that they managed all of this while staying true to the original Momentum form factor. The Z is heavier, more complicated, and much more ambitious inside, yet it still looks and lives like a Momentum. It fits on a normal rack shelf. At this level, that matters more than it might sound.

If you own an S250 or M400 and can swing the cost, the Dan D’Agostino Momentum Z gets my highest recommendation. In fact, if I were choosing between this and chasing the next source upgrade, I would do the amplifier first. The Z lets you hear more of everything already in front of it. I am hearing things from my Alexx V, at extremely low and extremely high volumes, that I simply have not heard before.
