Finally, I conducted a brief comparison between the Roma 510AC Signature and my reference amplification setup, Bryston’s BR‑20 streaming preamplifier (US$6995) and 7B³ monoblocks (US$7695 each) using the China Crisis LP mentioned above. The Synthesis amplifier presented a somewhat more intimate acoustic perspective, with a smaller soundstage than the one thrown by the Bryston setup. In contrast, images through the Roma were denser and more corporeal. The Bryston sounded more open and airier, but the Synthesis countered with a fuller, more saturated tonal palette. While the Roma was not quite as neutral or revealing of low-level detail as the Bryston, it imparted a distinct sense of character that suited the recording. I heard slightly less delicacy and air with the 510AC compared to the Bryston, yet voices and instruments possessed greater physical presence. Ultimately, the Roma traded a measure of analytical precision for a more seductive and immersive presentation. The Bryston provided greater extension both at the very top and bottom of the audible spectrum, delivering more grip and articulation, but with slightly less bass fulness.
