Let’s face it, channel exclusivity of power supplies can be built into a stereo chassis. But because reality bites, there’ll be practical constraints on size, weight and heat dissipation. Size and weight don’t just inform the consumer side about what’s manageable. It affects manufacturing and shipping too. With class A bias throwing off 90% of generated power as heat; and transformers getting bigger and heavier as power ratings escalate; what’s doable in a stereo chassis does eventual hit limits of plain common sense.”

” The NuPrime range also contains a headphone amp/DAC in the DAC-10H (above top, $1,795), but this one has balanced as well as quarter inch outputs that can be used simultaneously. It has five digital and two analogue inputs and comes in a preamp version dubbed DAC-10 (above below) without the headphone outputs, both have balanced and single ended outputs. Spec is very high with support for 32-bit/384kHz PCM and native DSD up to DSD256 via the asynchronous USB input. The NuPrime ST-10 (below) is a class D power amplifier rated at 150 Watts (8 Ohms) with claimed 85% efficiency and “near-reference” class sound for $1,595.

” That low-end deficiency puts the 50A’s tonality a little on the lean side, so taking a little care with system matching would be sensible. You’ll hardly notice the shortcoming paired with standmounters, but those fond of floorstanders should choose rich, sweet-sounding towers (say, the Q Acoustic Concept 40s) to flesh out the sound ”

” The Nemo produced the most subdued version, creating an almost tube-like rendition on Van’s voice. The Pass Labs Xs 300 produced something in between, but also with a bit more detail and natural texture than the Nemo or Nada. In my subjective opinion, the Pass Labs Xs 300 did the best job with this recording, taking the edge off Van’s voice while still providing every detail and nuance of that voice.”
