Matrix Quattro II DAC Review

” You can get incredibly flat and detailed DAC’s at lower prices, but this has a lot more in terms of format compatibility, and also inputs/outputs. The balanced outputs are great for higher end amps, along with 2 optical so you can hook this up to your TV and console in the living room and flick between sources with the included remote.

” Using the internal headphone amp really depends on your headphones, it is plenty powerful enough to drive most headphones, from sensitive in-ears to full size headphones. However I find the sound to be a little dull and lifeless, maybe I have been spoiled by the full and musical sound of my Feliks Audio Espressivo valve amp. My Fischer Audio FA-003ti sound a little off when played out of this amp, but my GMP 400 do fair better, with their excellent clarity you get very neutral and balanced sound from the Quattro.”
Aurender N100H music server/streamer review

Chatting to Aurender’s Harry Lee at the Munich High-End Show in May served as a reminder of how attitudes towards digital audio repositories still vary from one territory to the next. Despite the rise in popularity of lossless streaming services, multi-TB local storage – according to Lee – remains crucial to Asian markets where large libraries afford their owners serious bragging rights.
BMC PureDAC

In my full XLR connected system, I found that setting level output to 61 was about the best compromise for all musical genres. Sometimes playing orchestral recordings, I would reduce the output level at the BMC to 59, but increase the overall volume on my pre-amp for a more laid back, fuller and in scale orchestral presentation or when playing some nice female vocal recording like Stacy Kent, I would increase the BMC output slightly to 63, and reduce the pre-amp volume slightly to get a more focused vocal effect, so that illusive 50 cent mouth so craved by a certain audiophile group is easily attainable here! Doing that bring about a more luscious voice and a deeper, more tonic filled saxophone sound of Jim Tomlinson(Stacey’s life & musical partner), giving a more intense experience to the overall musical enjoyment.
MOON by Simaudio Neo 380D DSD Review

He sounds like the male equivalent of Natalie Merchant because of this richness. Underneath Laith’s vocal throughout much of the track exists a very natural sounding group of baritone backing vocalists. The 380D DSD does a terrific job of separating Laith’s vocal from this backing vocal. It’s like the backing vocal just hangs in the air supporting Laith while he belts out the main lyrics. Taken together the sound is simply great.

One performance characteristic is the dead quiet background. It provides a truly blank canvas to paint audio portraits on, capturing subtle nuance and detail. The other noteworthy area is the bass: dynamic and solid while simultaneously being exceptionally tight and detailed.

The option to alter the sound slightly via a choice of digital or analog attenuation allowed wiggle room for tweaking source material of differing genre and quality. Newfangled digital recordings often benefitted from the smoothing and texturally rounding effects of the analog option while the digital volume control created an at times tighter, less bass-heavy effect which I found useful for sorting out some modern classical recordings. Often this volume method toggle was made on a ‘tune by tune’ basis.

‘ The Converto isn’t quite the five-star product we’ve come to expect from Pathos. But it’s close. We’re fond of the no-frills approach to design, and although some may yearn for a display and remote, we never felt we were missing out.”

“I found no issues without having a gain switch on the ONE. The range of the volume control was very wide, so the ONE worked fine with both my Shure SE-425 IEMs and my Sennheiser HD-600s (I didn’t listen much with the 600s, but I wanted to be sure the ONE would drive them successfully). Battery life was very good. I did all my testing on a single set of batteries. While a rechargeable battery like all the other amps in this roundup is nice, good old-fashioned AAs have their advantages. If they’re flat, all you need to do is put in a new set. If one of the other amps is flat, you have no choice but to recharge, which isn’t much of an option if the plane is boarding right now”

“And if one needs name-dropping to be impressed, how about Jim Kinne, famed former Wadia Digital designer? That’s a name recognisable to hi-fi buffs who regularly read one, or both, of the “big two” US audio print magazines.”
