” The bass, mid bass and midrange units are made in house using YG Acoustics’ proprietary BilletCore technology: the drivers are precisely machined out of massive slabs of air craft grade aluminum. This unique process offers overwhelmingly superior dynamics, musical delicacy and low distortion due to industryleading rigidity and accuracy (tight tolerances). A pair of SonjaTM XV utilizes a total of 18 BilletCoreTM drivers.”

” I especially loved the way the UF5s transitioned smoothly from Reid’s bowed solo to the pizzicato walking bass line he played behind Lightsey’s solo; the speakers caught all the high-frequency detail in the bowed sound without emphasizing the couple of squeaks that Reid’s bow made during the solo, yet they also captured Reid’s rich, woody, hard-grooving pizzicato sound ”

MARTINLOGAN NEOLITH ELECTROSTATIC-HYBRID LOUDSPEAKER $80,000 – REVIEW

“As impressive as all the characteristics I’ve described are, and as important as they are to musical communication, what really sets the Neolith apart is its resolution. By resolution I mean the Neolith’s ability to convey everything that’s going on in a recording, from instrumental timbre, to the separation of individual instrumental lines, to micro-dynamic shadings, to the puff of air around image outlines, to transient information, to the space in which the recording was made. All is laid out in ravishing detail. The Neolith was particularly adept at clearly resolving every instrumental line, even within the most complex passages. I was continually amazed to hear previously buried instrumental parts in familiar music with such vivid clarity. The intricate horn arrangements of Gordon Goodwin in his modern interpretation of big band music, for example, were suddenly much more intelligible. The Neolith “de-homogenizes” the music and, in doing so, allows much more of the musicians’ intentions to be revealed.”

” My final selection was the late, great Bob Marley’s album Legend (Island), which contains all of his and the Wailers’ most important music from 1972 to 1981. This music demonstrated two more aspects of the Resolution BE’s sonic qualities. The first one was how quick and accurate this speaker is at following the ebb and flow of the dynamics of music. Secondly, the overall tonality is silky and smooth, including the high-end frequencies; therefore, the Resolution BE never gets “in your face” no matter what the volume level is. Additionally, it will effortlessly play very loudly without sounding mechanical or analytical.”

Sony SS-NA5ES loudspeaker $6000 – Review
July 25, 2016 Comments Off on Sony SS-NA5ES loudspeaker $6000 – Review
“At the end of the day, literally and figuratively, I achieved the best results—defined for my purposes as the smoothest bass response, not the deepest bass per se—when the left-channel Sony was 28.5″ from its sidewall, the right-channel Sony was 30″ from its wall, and both were 40.5″ from the front wall. I heard the best combination of spatial performance and treble naturalness when the baffles were aimed directly at my ears, and while the bass went apparently lower when I moved my listening seat closer to the rear wall, the Sonys’ spatial performance was best enjoyed from a distance of 6′ to 7′, measured on-axis from both cabinets.

Westlake Audio Tower 5 Loudspeakers $28,000 Review
July 20, 2016 Comments Off on Westlake Audio Tower 5 Loudspeakers $28,000 Review
“The Westlake Audio Tower 5 is not a perfect speaker. Some may find them too small for an extra-large listening room. And then there is the cost, only a little south of 30-grand isn’t the type of purchase that many of us make on impulse. But if one can afford this amount for a pair of made-in-the-USA speakers, I say go for it. For those with a smaller to medium sized listening room, and even for those with a listening room on the larger side, these speakers do so many things right and make me search for things to say negative that I have no choice but to give them my highest recommendation.”
