” The well-braced cabinets are made of a composite of Apple ply brand void-free plywood and Medex panels (similar to MDF but water- and mold-resistant). The foundation or base is separate from the cabinet and joined with a semi-hard or firm membrane that somewhat decouples the speaker — let’s say it is a very firm decoupling, and the rubber leveling casters further decouple the loudspeaker, if needed for hard tile floors.”

” The SE’s handled these notes very well. Now I’m not saying that the SE’s will produce the kind of foundation-challenging bottom end I get from my Legacy Focus SE’s in my Large-Room Reference system, but in my small room the kind of articulate and fairly deep bass the GT SE can conjure up is impressive and deserving of respect. In fact, with the PS Audio DirectStream as the DAC (with the Pike’s Peak firmware) the SE’s spilled out bass details on familiar recordings that I had never heard before. That’s how articulate their bass performance can be with the right associated gear and a good room to support it.”

“The other area the Epicon 8s exceed their specs is in low frequency extension. While not overly scientific, they are claimed 3db down at 35hz, yet even 25hz test tones are barely diminished in comparison to the 30 and 40hz tones, at least in my test room. Playing music in the real world proves equally compelling; whether you prefer Infected Mushroom or Genesis, the Epicon 8s go deep.”

” That ability to start and stop sounds on a dime, which I alluded to with the music selections, shone through in spades with the Daredevil soundtrack. Because the titular character Matt Murdock/Daredevil is blind, his superpowers involve super-hearing. In a number of scenes, when Daredevil focuses his hearing, this is demonstrated by taking a large canvas of sound–like a gritty New York street traffic scene–and fading to hone in on a single sound, like an innocent victim’s cry for help. ”

“The Acoustic Energys aren’t the weightiest or richest speakers we’ve heard – their temperament favouring the lean side of neutral – so avoid partnering them with similarly thin-sounding kit.

” ‘ve been living with these speakers for a few months now, and I didn’t start my critical listening until they were thoroughly run in. I’ve found I’m listening to a broader range of music now, since they are comfortable in jazz, classical, spoken word, heavy metal, folk, tango, pretty much everything except the new Dylan album, for which I blame Dylan, not YG. I don’t like that album anywhere, even though I love pretty much everything else he ever recorded. But I am also keeping some recordings, like The Retrospect Ensemble’s Bach Harpsichord Concertos [Linn CKD 410] for the car, since I find them uncomfortably thin here. Surprising, since so many other Linn SACD recordings sound great.”

” There are plenty of options for high-quality stand/shelf speakers or monitors in the $3,000 range—from Bower Wilkins, Sonus faber, Harbeth, and numerous others—and the $2,995 DALI Rubicon 2s certainly hold their own. Their most praise-worthy characteristics are their accuracy, clarity, and broad frequency response, with an especially notable bass response for their size.”

” Per usual with Paradigm, these made-in-Canada speakers are well built and very attractive. Even a picky high-end audiophile will like the aesthetic of this speaker. Cabinet finishes come in Gloss Piano Black, Midnight Cherry, Satin Walnut (the review sample pair) and Satin Black Walnut. The five-way binding posts are easily accessible and the magnet-attached grill makes removal a snap.”

” The trick is to use virtually no toe-in. This isn’t a hardship, since the XB requires none to produce stellar imaging. Also, be sure to employ the supplied spikes. They’re not your run-of-the-mill doohickeys, but rather an integral part of the system. They do a commendable job of soothing the highs so you can focus on hearing what and how the musicians are playing. ”
