“Focus here really is on the upper mids and highs but it’s not as if there is no more bass. Bass quantity still is good and bass sounds powerful with an impactful delivery. It isn’t the tightest or most detailed/layered bass however and it’s more impact/presence than it is quality. The mids and treble are very clear and sound lively with more forward and thinner vocals. Left/right balance and separation is very good and for the $109 price this IEM is going for it has a good level of detail and spaciousness”

” The DAVE did indeed do well with piano. O’Riley’s notes were very well defined, placing the instrument solidly between and behind the speakers. I switched from Pure Music to the Tidal desktop app and called up Daniel Barenboim’s recent solo recording of Liszt’s arrangement of Solemn March to the Holy Grail, from Wagner’s Parsifal, from On My New Piano (16/44.1 Tidal HiFi stream, Deutsche Grammophon 289 479 6724). The deep tolling bass notes of Barenboim’s unique straight-strung piano sounded majestic with the DAVE in the system”

“Fatigue is a big one for me. When a recording isn’t all that well done in the upper midrange and highs to begin with, it only takes a hint of added digital glare to impede the listening experience after just a short time. In such an instance, I prefer the stock form microRendu to the stock form sMS-200. The SOtM is a bit more lit up and revealing while Sonore’s widget ends up being a tad more forgiving – a good thing in some instances. With the PS-1 in place, the sMS-200 exposes more of music’s organic tone whilst maintaining its revealing nature. It’s a delicate balancing act whose accomplishments very clearly rest on the shoulders of this Wyred 4 Sound upgrade.”

” These are some of the most entertaining loudspeakers I’ve heard at this or any other price: not entertaining in a comedy way, but simply entertaining to sit in front of and enjoy music through. I suspect this might not be the ideal design for a reviewer (high sensitivity and an active bass unit makes them undemanding for analysing what an amp is trying to do for a living), but the very thing that recuses them from reviewing use is the very thing that makes them wonderful for real people. They are effortless sounding, and removing the stress from the amplifier makes it shine. Were I not doing the reviewing thing on a daily basis, I’d happily buy a pair of Avantgarde Acoustics Zero – TA and enjoy them for the longest time. I will be suggesting them heavily to anyone who asks, too – in original or new Teil Aktiv form. Strongly recommended!”

“Cabinet construction on the Air Motion speakers looks quite good. The Air Motion speakers are hefty little bookshelf and center speakers, weighing 14.3 and 26.5 lbs respectively. The knock test produces a dulled sound that bodes well for quiet paneling during the speaker’s operation. The cabinet panels are made from high-density fiberboard of a 21 mm thickness (or just over ⅘ inches), however, MDF has greater self-damping and is said to be a superior acoustic material. There is a window brace midway in the speaker between the woofer and tweeter that is also 21 mm HDF. As mentioned before, the tweeter has its own sealed compartment to completely block off backwave pressure from the woofer from interfering with the tweeter’s lateral travel during playback. ”

” With the stock cable, however, there does appear to be a tendency for an ever so slightly thinner note portrayal (which can be fixed with aftermarket cables as described below). Nonetheless, the HE-1000 V2’s midrange is neutral and linear with perceptively fast leading transients. Both male and female vocals benefit from this cleaner and more resolute signature. In “Dance Hall Days” by Imperial Mammoth, for example, the capabilities of the V2 become evident through the projection of sonic cues in the dimensions of depth and width, propensity to handle gradations in sound levels and a subjectively pleasant tonal signature.”

“The DAC9’s chunky metal remote-control handset provides all the controls found on the front panel, as well as some on the menu. The lid to the battery bay is secured by a screw — a welcome improvement over ARC’s plastic remotes of yesteryear, which had snap-on latches. The DAC9 has no volume control, so you can’t use it to drive a power amp directly. Decent volume controls aren’t cheap; its omission here has no doubt kept the DAC9’s price down. And, of course, ARC makes some fine line stages — such as the matching LS28, which looks really good next to the DAC9.”
