“Cabinet construction on the Air Motion speakers looks quite good. The Air Motion speakers are hefty little bookshelf and center speakers, weighing 14.3 and 26.5 lbs respectively. The knock test produces a dulled sound that bodes well for quiet paneling during the speaker’s operation. The cabinet panels are made from high-density fiberboard of a 21 mm thickness (or just over ⅘ inches), however, MDF has greater self-damping and is said to be a superior acoustic material. There is a window brace midway in the speaker between the woofer and tweeter that is also 21 mm HDF. As mentioned before, the tweeter has its own sealed compartment to completely block off backwave pressure from the woofer from interfering with the tweeter’s lateral travel during playback. ”

” With the stock cable, however, there does appear to be a tendency for an ever so slightly thinner note portrayal (which can be fixed with aftermarket cables as described below). Nonetheless, the HE-1000 V2’s midrange is neutral and linear with perceptively fast leading transients. Both male and female vocals benefit from this cleaner and more resolute signature. In “Dance Hall Days” by Imperial Mammoth, for example, the capabilities of the V2 become evident through the projection of sonic cues in the dimensions of depth and width, propensity to handle gradations in sound levels and a subjectively pleasant tonal signature.”

“The DAC9’s chunky metal remote-control handset provides all the controls found on the front panel, as well as some on the menu. The lid to the battery bay is secured by a screw — a welcome improvement over ARC’s plastic remotes of yesteryear, which had snap-on latches. The DAC9 has no volume control, so you can’t use it to drive a power amp directly. Decent volume controls aren’t cheap; its omission here has no doubt kept the DAC9’s price down. And, of course, ARC makes some fine line stages — such as the matching LS28, which looks really good next to the DAC9.”

” Track nine, Passacaglia, is always fun and a good system test. As the music starts from a barely audible creep, the strings are very sweet sounding. One can almost smell the wood of the instruments, if the listening room lights and one’s mind are turned off. As the horns slip in, they have great definition even at very low volume levels. This is always the mark of a good DAC.

“At this point, I caught the bug and started burning through a bunch of tracks just to hear stuff. The Shelby Lynne audiophile classic “Just a Little Lovin’ ” left my mouth hanging open: The bigger-than-life opening drum kit and guitar notes, followed by Lynne’s huge and sultry voice, were set into a seemingly boundary-less soundstage. The high-quality material from Frederick Fennell leading the Dallas Wind Symphony, courtesy of Reference Recordings, was also favored by the RS100s. The speakers beautifully delivered the flutes, woodwinds, and horns in the “At the Ballet” section of a medley from A Chorus Line, filling up the room with their collective, harmonious power. And I could go on, of course.”

“The Benchmark AHB2 embodies everything that a solid-state amp should. It is a technologically advanced and remarkable amplifier that can hang with any amp in its class because it is sonically transparent, images beautifully, and produces authoritative bass. While costing only $2,995, it is hard to imagine asking for much more in a power amplifier. In fact, if the AHB2 cost another $1,000, I would still call it a bargain. Interestingly, while my Focal speakers are easy to drive, the AHB2 can probably drive a set of modestly inefficient floor-standing speakers to reasonable listening levels without any strain whatsoever. If you are looking to spend between $2,500 and $4,500 on a stereo, solid-state amplifier, it would be foolish not to consider the AHB2 a strong contender.”
