“If I had to point out any area which leaves room for improvement – if my life depended on it – I would be asking for a crisper and rougher textured bass. However, this demand is not eligible since I haven’t heard better in portable hifi yet. You have to know your equipment very well to notice which link of a chain has which effect. Hugo covers two links at once since it only allows digital inputs.”

” As such, the idea of purchasing a Sonos system for your ’stereo’ might be your cup of tea if you like the sound kaleidoscopic with a seriously brilliant subwoofer. But for the gentle side of an audiophile’s nature, Sonos’ sound design won’t last the long term. But if you only have 2K to spend, you could do a lot worse.”

” One loudspeaker. Launched in 1995, the original A.C.T. One was a revolution in loudspeaker design and it’s top was the first example of a sloping design in the industry. The modern equivalent has been manufactured using the same highly advanced carbon composite tooling used to create the loudspeaker cabinet, the A.C.T. One Evolution top is a masterpiece of engineering”

” when set at 100ohms for comparison with the original (using a Roksan Xerxes-RB1000-Benz ACE-L red combi), the little improvements noted mirrored those heard with the MM setting. From experience, I already knew the ACE to not be too sensitive to loading, but I noted a higher loading could give an impression of a little more airiness. The effect is slight and the honest truth is that, in the context of this set-up, if I left the room and someone turned the little pots on the Plus to all of its 550-ohm upper limit, I probably wouldn’t notice upon coming back in”

” Speaking of spooky realism, at times it almost felt as if the Holly Cole Trio had dropped from the hi-res digital realm right into the listening room. On the well-recorded Girl Talk, “Talk to Me,” Cole’s articulation on ending syllables and fricatives was incredibly detailed and lifelike. The title track and “Cruisin’” delivered hi-def resolution with spaciousness galore and astounding attack and decay.”

” Ok so this was a genuine surprise. I was expecting the better than average imaging given the 8 BA driver setup but to throw in an excellent and relatively large soundstage was a bit of unexpected but very welcome bonus. ”

” When I first listened to these, I found the highs a little lacking in presence and sparkle, but now I don’t find that an issue. They are by no stretch bright headphones, but the highs extend and compliment the mix very well, they are well separated and controlled, you can hear every tap and crash of a cymbal, you can hear it extend and gently roll off, very detailed and never splashy.”

“The new Sony Walkman features Bluetooth—a very nice feature. According to the specs, you can either pair the new walkman with wireless headphones or synchronize it wirelessly. It also includes an FM antenna in the ability to show videos and photos, although given the small screen and form factor this doesn’t seem to be a great practical use for the device.”

“The evaluation of any audio product tends to begin with an overly analytical period in which favorite demo and test tracks are played to figure out precisely what is going on. Though in most cases this is a necessity, there is nonetheless a disconnect between how one responds to such an artificial situation and how one responds to the music — of which the reproduction for pure enjoyment is the reason we do any of this at all. I’m an album listener, not a track hound.”

” I ran in the HE1000 with my usual nightstand system. That’s one of our AIFF-loaded 160GB iPod Classics on a Pro-Ject dock. This sends out digits first to a Wyred4Sound Remedy, then the coaxial input of the Lilt DAC/preamp from Russia (MSB/TotalDAC style discrete R2R conversion, resistor-array analog volume, single-ended output buffer with triode-connected direct-heated pentodes). That shiny machine supplies unattenuated analog signal to the Bakoon AMP-12R integrated. Admittedly a gilded setting upward of €10’000 for just the electronics, this was flatly appropriate for the ambitious HE1000. Despite its awesome ear-coverage size, it’s a very smooth comfortable operator. The pliable perforated skull strap which is made of something resembling sanded suede causes no contact irritation like other bigwigs even when their thicker bridges are padded with copious foam. The pads are lined in faux leather except for the actual contact rims which are velour.”
