The drive unit employs a pair of high precision, Swiss made, decoupled, brushless DC motors. The drive system alone weighs 24.6 pounds. An accelerometer monitors the floating chassis to insure absolute stability before speed calibration, which is accomplished over a 20 second window during actual vinyl playback. During the cycle the platter’s speed is compared to a high precision quartz reference. During listening no active speed control occurs, which is said to eliminate the negative sonic effects created by “cogging” and other issues produced by active speed adjustment protocols.

The platter material is of a highly specialized, very high density (60% more dense than titanium) non-ferrous alloy with extreme damping properties, called Exium AM® developed by a French company at the request of CNES (France’s equivalent to NASA). The alloy, after being spun in a centrifugal casting machine in molten form, is CNC machined into a 14.3 pound platter. It’s the first audio component ever to be produced using this exotic material.

TAD ME1 STAND-MOUNT SPEAKER $14,995 REVIEW

April 26, 2022 Comments Off on TAD ME1 STAND-MOUNT SPEAKER $14,995 REVIEW

TAD has put a lot of R&D into creating a compact stand-mount speaker. The ME1s look high quality and sound remarkable for their size. If you don’t like larger towers in your media room, these might be what you are looking for. When mated with a small sub, you have a two-channel music system that sounds amazingly large. I can only imagine what the ME1s larger brothers sound like!

NAD C 700 Streaming Amplifier Review

A genuine one-box hi-fi solution, NAD’s C 700 bundles wired and wireless connectivity, slick app-based operation and punchy amplification into a pleasingly small enclosure. In that sense it’s very much a junior version of the M10, and those who can live without touchscreen control and Dirac Live room correction should grab a listen. There’s energy and detail here aplenty. Call it ‘the little amp that could

Canton Vento 100 Review

It might sound obvious, but of course this Vento is the best of all time thus far – excluding the Reference K models, from which its development unquestionably benefited, for obvious reasons. Titanium graphite marks a further step towards the ceramic cone materials, that‘s also for sure. It is a kind of intermediate step in making the membrane even better compared to the preceding generation. The difference in sound quality compared to the Reference is certainly no longer as great as the difference in price.

Sound quality, workmanship, design as well as the expected longevity are of the finest kind, for which you may certainly spend almost 5,000 euros in this case – whether in high gloss black or white. I really enjoyed the universal 896.2, but you have to love this even finer as well as more potent Vento 100

Denafrips Apollo Power Amp Review

The magnificent ESOTERIC Japan remastering of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen (14 SACDs—selling for up to 5K on Ebay!) was a perfect foil for the Denafrips, Das Rheingold, especially. As the opening musical description of the River Rhine (a never ending low Eb on 4 string basses) continues, the Apollo was able to separate the cellos from distinct timbre of the basses—Wagner changes the orchestral voicing to represent the rise of the Rhienmaidens from the bottom of the river. This is a tough test for any amplifier. Pass.

As for the comparative testing, the Rowland was 10K and my MBL runs $17,600. Both should be a step up in refinement. Examples from Boulder and Dagostino Master Systems, two of the top solid staters in the business, run into the post $50K price range. So, the Apollo matching the more expensive tube Allnic or even approaching the Rowland sound for only $3700 makes it a stonking high end bargain.

AVM INSPIRATION CS 2.3 Compact Streaming CD Receiver

This appears to be her most ambitious and creative album thus far. For a while I thought Roon Radio was choosing all kinds of music for me after track 1—‘Wuthering Heights’, which begins with an exotic religious sounding sean-nós style in which you can vividly hear the natural echos of the church venue, but, I was wrong. It was Salvant each time on the same album—as if changing costumes. A singular talent. Just as a world-class actress can play any role, Salvant can sing any style. And she composed most of the album tracks herself. The track, ‘I lost My Mind’, with electronic voice, is reminiscent of Kraftwerk, and it contains some deep, shaking church organ as well. The musicians backing her up (bass, banjo, flute, piano, percussion, guitar), creativity, and recording quality are truly outstanding. The CS 2.3 displayed all with aplomb.
