Tempting though it may be to think ‘but it’s just a computer and some storage’, Grimm Audio’s MU1 is all about delivering the best possible digital data to your DAC. To that end, this is an entirely convincing ‘transport’ solution, and is capable of sparkling results. The ‘analogue/digital’ thing may be a blind alley, but the MU1 still delivers one of the most musical sounds I’ve heard from digital to date.

Sonus Faber Heritage Collection Maxima Amator Loudspeakers $15,000 REVIEW

February 13, 2021 Comments Off on Sonus Faber Heritage Collection Maxima Amator Loudspeakers $15,000 REVIEW

Sonus Faber’s target audience for its Heritage Collection, and for the Maxima Amator in particular, is not audiophiles who are cross-shopping designs from Focal, Magico, and/or Wilson Audio Specialties. This is an artisanal loudspeaker. The marriage of so many materials—solid walnut, leather, brass, marble—into such an evocative form gives the Sonus Faber a presence and a gravitas that are difficult to describe. It’s also a very good loudspeaker, with admirable output down to 35Hz, and a commendably linear, uncolored mid band. The Maxima Amator’s tipped-up tweeter means that its sound is not strictly neutral, but Sonus Faber’s skillful voicing has maximized the speaker’s dynamics without making it sound harsh or bright.

Reel-To-Reel Recorders

The successor to the A77, the B77 represents a development of the older model rather than an entirely new design. A number of changes have been made, significant enough to say at the outset, that while I had considerable respect for the A77, I did not personally favour certain aspects of its performance, notably poor level matching, premature overload of electronics and poor control ergonomics. However, all these have been resolved in the new model, as well as refinements made.

For example, the capstan motor – the famous direct-drive tachogenerator design – has been further developed and is now closer to that of the Revox A700. The deck will also accept an accessory that allows fine control of capstan speed and hence of musical pitch, when required. Improvements to head quality have resulted in increased life as well as a more uniform frequency response, and the transport section has now eliminated those occasionally troublesome relays, with their function now carried out by semiconductors, bringing an expected increase in reliability.

Yamaha A-S3200 Integrated Amplifier $7499 Review

https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/1509-yamaha-a-s3200-integrated-amplifier

There’s much to be said for simple elegance, whether in a graceful haiku or Yamaha’s exquisite A-S3200. With the latter, you simply connect your turntable and CD player, or any source with analog outputs, connect your speakers, sit back, and enjoy impeccably musical sound. There’s no app to install, no digital inputs to configure, no calibration to be done. To sound its best it needs quite a bit of burn-in, as well as time to warm up each time it’s turned on—but as I sat there watching the needles of its beautiful level meters dancing along in time to the sublimely reproduced music, I knew it was worth the wait. The A-S3200 isn’t cheap, but considering the quality of its construction, the uniqueness of its handsome, classic visual design, and the quality of its sound, it’s a stunning integrated amplifier that I’d be proud to own and prominently display in my audio system.

Moonriver 404 Reference integrated amplifier $4995 Review

For more longevity, he made the 404 Reference easily serviceable: It has a removable bottom that gives access to both sides. “When you have through-hole components rather than surface-mount components, and you have access to both sides of the PCB [printed circuit board], you can service the amplifier very easily,” he said. “The chip I use has a very short signal path and doesn’t have crosstalk or interference between the discrete transistors that are usually used in a power amplifier. It also includes essential protection circuits that guard against damage from overheating, short circuits, and voltage spikes. This creates the kind of transparency that only single-ended amplifiers have.

Paradigm Persona B £7,800 REVIEW

February 10, 2021 Comments Off on Paradigm Persona B £7,800 REVIEW

https://www.hifichoice.com/content/paradigm-persona-b

The Persona B does things I’ve never heard a loudspeaker do before, although it can sometimes struggle to do some of the things I enjoy about other designs. It’s akin to owning a Lamborghini – a staggering work of high-end engineering with breakneck acceleration and laser sharp handling that’s not ideal for nipping down the shops for a pint of milk. It can depict every molecule of the soundscape, but can leave you wanting a little less insight and a bit more musicality. It’s an addictive listen nonetheless. Play any track you think you know well and it’s like you’re hearing it for the first time. There’s a new vivid ‘air’ around performers as though you’ve pushed right to the front row of the gig. The main challenge is that I sometimes yearn for a touch more warmth and low-end extension to balance the extraordinary midband depth and treble insight. Experimenting with volume and amplification exhibits gains in warmth and bass extension as you add greater power, but only to a point and this is where it becomes clear that the Persona B could be a world beater when allied to a subwoofer, just as it would in a home cinema setup

Magico S1 Mk II Loudspeakers Review

February 9, 2021 Comments Off on Magico S1 Mk II Loudspeakers Review

http://www.10audio.com/magico_s1-mkii.htm

I often move a review along, going from the audition and note-taking step to writing the actual review in a few months. The Magico speakers have been the primary speakers for over a year and have proved to be an excellent tool to understand the particular characteristics of whatever component was being evaluated upstream. In fact, most of the long-term upstream components including turntables, tonearms, phono stage, DAC, preamp and amplifier have all changed in the last year or so, mostly to get the best from the S1 Mk II. The truly excellent Magico S1 Mk II speakers have continued to be completely enjoyable music makers. But as with other gear, they are destined to be welcomed into a new home one day. That day is heavily dependent on me finally making up my mind which of the beautiful Magico S1 M-Coat colors is preferred. Happy listening!”

PrimaLuna EVO 100 Integrated Amplifier Review

REVIEW: The PrimaLuna EVO 100 Integrated Amplifier

The different sonic characters available with different tubes, is more than another article, so perhaps we’ll pick that up in an upcoming article or video, so stay tuned. Either way, this is another aspect of PrimaLuna ownership that really ups the fun factor. With it so easy to swap tubes, both small signal and output – it’s easy to fine tune your EVO100 exactly to your taste. Me, I’m not a big tube roller anymore, and vintage NOS EL34s are prohibitively expensive. But if you have to go down that rabbit hole, it can be as long of a journey as you’d like it to be. Not to mention Kevin Deal and Upscale Audio have the biggest stash of tubes on the planet, so their staff can help you with your journey.

ROON NUCLEUS PLUS MUSIC SERVER $2,559 REVIEW

February 6, 2021 Comments Off on ROON NUCLEUS PLUS MUSIC SERVER $2,559 REVIEW

The Roon Nucleus and Nucleus Plus are amazingly capable devices. For a power user who needs the flexibility that the Nucleus series offers, and who wants to avoid the time and trouble of building their own Nucleus-type device, the prices are justified. Also, by buying the Nucleus, one gets a full two-year repair or replacement warranty from Roon.

Using the Nucleus via Roon Remote is a very comfortable experience, particularly for users who are already familiar with the interface. Even for beginners, the Roon Remote software has a very mild learning curve, and users will quickly be able to access all the features. I’d have to conclude that Roon’s goal of user-friendliness for the Nucleus has been met.

ASTELL&KERN SE200 REVIEW

February 6, 2021 Comments Off on ASTELL&KERN SE200 REVIEW

I applaud AK for their dedication to innovation and simply trying something different when it came to the Astell&Kern SE200. Going to the trouble to develop and fine-tune not one, but two entire digital/analogue pairings within the gorgeous enclosure the SE200 is quite remarkable in terms of it being an engineering feat alone. So who is it for then? While I did hypothesise that the SE200 is probably best suited for ‘digital tweakers’, it also happens to be an impressively capable and simply stunning-sounding device irrespective of which side of its personality that you choose. Would I make use of the multiple digital options within the SE200? Probably not. But would I be very, very happy to have it as my go-to on-the-go player? You betcha.

Where Am I?
